Chapter 8 - Truth in the Firelight

Elena didn't flinch. She had anticipated this confrontation from the moment she boarded the flight.

""My sister, Clara, was your courier,"" Elena revealed, her voice steady in the quiet room. ""She sent me an encrypted message three days before she died. She said she had discovered a traitor within the Vance family—someone who intended to kill your newborn to take control of your assets.""

Mateo’s jaw clenched, his dark eyes narrowing dangerously. ""And you thought you could protect him alone?""

""I knew no one would listen to Clara’s sister,"" Elena answered, stepping into his space. ""I had to see who had him. I had to know if you were the monster they claimed you were, or if you were just a father who didn't know how to keep his son safe.""

Mateo stared at her, stunned by her sheer audacity. No one spoke to him like that and lived. Yet looking at her calm defiance and the tenderness she had shown his child, the cold fury inside him began to fracture.

Before he could answer, the bedroom door swung open. Victoria stood on the threshold, flanked by two armed men loyal to her father's syndicate.
