Chapter 3 - An Unspoken Connection

Mateo’s fingers twitched toward the medallion, but Elena shifted subtly, adjusting the baby’s blanket to conceal it. The silence in the cabin grew suffocating. Victoria watched them like a hawk, her manicured fingers digging into her leather purse.

""Mateo,"" Victoria said sharply, breaking the tension. ""Hand the child to the nurse at the back when we land. We have business in Geneva, and an attendant has no place in this.""

Mateo ignored Victoria entirely. He remained crouched before Elena, his dark eyes probing hers. ""Who gave you that necklace?"" he asked, his voice a low, lethal hum.

Elena kept her chin high, though her pulse hammered wildly beneath her skin. ""It belonged to my sister,"" she answered truthfully. ""She died three months ago.""

Mateo stiffened. His mind raced back to an ambush three months ago on the Italian border—a courier had died shielding a delivery that was supposed to save his son’s mother. The infant, Leo, had survived, but the mystery surrounding the courier’s true allegiance remained unsolved. Looking into Elena’s hazel eyes, Mateo realized this was no coincidental flight assignment.
