Chapter 6 - A Lethal Bargain

Before the assailant could pull the trigger, Mateo drove his elbow into the man’s throat, wresting the gun free and throwing the attacker onto the tarmac in one fluid, brutal motion. He ushered Elena down the mobile ramp, surrounded by the barrage of gunfire and thick black smoke.

They scrambled into the armored vehicle. Victoria had already scrambled inside from the primary door, pale and furious. Mateo slammed the heavy door shut, and the armored SUV surged forward, tires screeching against wet asphalt.

""They knew our flight path,"" Mateo breathed, his dark eyes burning with fury. He checked his son, finding Leo safe in Elena’s arms, though Elena's emerald dress was stained with grease and soot.

""Someone inside your organization sold you out,"" Elena said, her voice shaking slightly, yet remarkably controlled for a civilian.

Victoria sneered, pointing an accusing finger at Elena. ""Or maybe it was her! Who verified her credentials? No one!""

Mateo looked from Victoria to Elena. Without a word, he reached inside his jacket, pulled out his weapon, and placed it on the console between them. ""We find out tonight.""
