Chapter 12 - Escape Across the Water

The cold wind of Lake Geneva hit them like a slap as they exited the tunnel onto a concealed wooden dock. A sleek, high-speed motorboat bobbed in the dark water, engines already idling quietly.
""Get in!"" Mateo commanded, helping Elena step aboard while shielding the infant with his long coat.
From the tunnel entrance behind them, three armed mercenaries burst onto the dock, opening fire. The bullets chewed into the wooden planks, throwing up splinters. Mateo leaned around the boat's reinforced console, returning fire with lethal precision, dropping two attackers before leaping aboard and slamming the throttle forward.
The boat surged into the icy black waters, leaping across the waves as gunfire ricocheted off the reinforced stern. Elena knelt on the floor of the cabin, whispering soothing words to baby Leo, pressing her cheek against his trembling face.
