Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Dark

Elena stirred against Hamilton’s shoulder, a soft shudder running through her frame. Her brow furrowed in distress as fragments of nightmares from the raid caught up to her. Her lips parted, and a faint, desperate whisper slipped out into the quiet cabin.
“Vane... it was Vane all along...”
Hamilton’s body went completely rigid. The whiskey glass in his hand cracked slightly against the pressure of his tightening grip. Vane—the head of internal security, a man they had trusted as a brother for over a decade. If Vane had turned, the entire infrastructure of their syndicate was exposed from the inside out.

Marcus and Viktor exchanged a grim look, the reality of the betrayal sinking in like cold steel. Hamilton leaned down, pressing his lips against Elena’s temple, whispering soothingly until her breathing evened out once more.
“Vane,” Hamilton repeated under his breath, a dark, dangerous promise forming in his eyes. “You magnificent bastard. You just signed your own death warrant.”
