Chapter 1 - The Weight of Ink

Evelyn held the emerald green dossier between two manicured fingers, steady as a marble column. Across the polished floorboards, Evelyn’s mother-in-law, Martha Vance, stood frozen. The cruel smirk that had etched deep lines into Martha’s face was replaced by an ashen pallor. Beneath her leopard-print wrap dress, her chest rose and fell in jagged, shallow breaths. The photographs of her son, Marcus, laughing brazenly on sun-drenched balconies with a blonde junior associate, remained scattered across the ivory bedspread.
""Prison?"" Martha finally managed, her voice cracking like dry kindling. ""You ungrateful girl. Marcus built everything you touch. You have nothing without him.""
""Marcus built debts, Martha,"" Evelyn replied softly. ""I built the empire that absorbed them."" She opened the folder, letting the crisp parchment rustle in the morning air. ""This house is registered exclusively under my family's trust. The mortgage was paid by my father's liquidation funds. Your son hasn't earned enough to cover the monthly taxes in five years. More importantly, he forged my signature on a six-million-dollar collateral lien to keep his shell company afloat.""
Martha backed away, her hands clutching at the diamond brooch pinned over her heart—a gift Marcus had bought with Evelyn’s joint account. ""This is bluffing. You love him. You would never ruin his name.""
""Love requires respect, not blindness,"" Evelyn said, tapping the corner of the document against Martha’s trembling shoulder. ""The sheriff arrives at noon. Sign the voluntary release of tenancy, pack your designer knockoffs, and leave. If Marcus is still on this property line when the clock strikes twelve, the district attorney gets the second file.""
Martha swallowed hard, looking toward the hallway as if waiting for a savior who would never come. Slowly, her trembling fingers reached for the golden pen held in Evelyn’s outstretched palm. She scrawled a crooked, illegible line across the dotted margin, practically tearing the fiber.
""You think you’ve won,"" Martha hissed, venom returning to her tongue as she straightened her back. ""Marcus has people you know nothing about. When he realizes what you’ve taken, you won't live to see the sunset.""
Evelyn didn't blink. ""Then tell him to hurry.""
As Martha hurried out the master bedroom door, muttering curses into her phone, Evelyn turned back to the nightstand. She reached beneath the drawer runner, feeling the cool metal of an encrypted hard drive hidden in the dark frame.

Her phone buzzed abruptly on the mattress. A text message lit the screen from an unregistered number: Check the living room safe before you pack. He already transferred the bearer bonds.
Evelyn stared at the message, her blood turning to ice. Only one person in the world knew about the safe behind the foyer mirror.
