Chapter 2 - The Emptied Vault

The foyer mirror swung open on oiled hinges without a sound. Behind the heavy bevel glass, the biometric dial flashed red, signaling a forced override from hours prior. Evelyn keyed her backup sequence anyway, her knuckles whitening against the steel panel. The lock clicked, releasing the door with a hollow thud.
Inside, the velvet shelves were stripped bare. The bearer bonds representing her grandfather’s lifetime shipping shares—forty million dollars in bearer equity—were gone. In their place sat a solitary velvet jeweler's pouch and a single silver key stamped with the logo of a private rail freight yard outside the city docks.
A cold, calculating fury settled over Evelyn. For years, she had played the doting, subservient bride to soothe the bruised ego of a mediocre heir. She had swallowed Martha's bitter insults, tolerated Marcus's condescending remarks at corporate galas, and allowed his family to treat her ancestral wealth like their personal trust fund. But this theft was not desperate negligence; it was premeditated plunder.
The heavy front door swung inward with an aggressive crash.
""Evelyn!""
Marcus entered like a storm of fine tailoring and reckless arrogance. His silk tie was undone, his expensive linen coat wrinkling around his shoulders. He smelled faintly of gin and expensive perfume—an almond-scented floral blend that certainly didn't belong to his wife.
""My mother just called me in tears,"" Marcus bellowed, marching down the grand corridor with his jaw clenched. ""Have you lost your mind? Evicting my mother? Accusing me of fraud?""
Evelyn turned slowly from the safe, leaving the door wide open so he could see the hollow chamber behind her. ""Where are the bearer bonds, Marcus?""
Marcus paused mid-stride, his arrogant smirk faltering for an infinitesimal fraction of a second before hardening into stone. ""I don't know what you're talking about. The family assets are under corporate restructuring. My advisors—""
""You stole bearer paper registered to my grandfather's trust,"" Evelyn interrupted, her tone devoid of rage, chilling in its absolute flatline. ""And you gave the secondary access code to Julian Mercer.""

Marcus’s face shifted from bluster to genuine terror. He took an involuntary step back toward the threshold. ""How do you know that name?""
Before Evelyn could reply, two black SUVs with tinted windows pulled up the winding driveway outside, blocking Marcus's sports car with military precision.
