Chapter 6 - The Architect's Vault

Evelyn reached into her pajama pocket and pulled out the small silver key she had just recovered from the opened safe. She held it up between her fingers, catching the harsh daylight streaming through the arched windows.
""Marcus thought this belonged to a private freight yard at the docks,"" Evelyn said, watching her husband's jaw drop in utter bewilderment. ""He thought he was clever, slipping into my dressing room at two in the morning, swapping out my grandfather's strongbox keys for duplicates. But my grandfather never stored equity in commercial yards. This key opens the drainage pump house beneath the Vance family winery in Napa.""
Marcus let out a ragged gasp. ""The winery? That property was abandoned twenty years ago! The land is toxic!""
""The land is pristine,"" Evelyn corrected, stepping away from Mercer's proximity. ""My grandfather bought the surrounding water rights through a blind trust before you were even born, Marcus. He leased the surface to your father to save him from complete humiliation. Arthur Vance didn't die bankrupt; he died terrified because he realized my family owned the ground beneath his feet, the water in his wells, and the legal paper on every bottle his company ever shipped.""
Mercer tilted his head, calculating the variables with mathematical detachment. ""Which means the shipping routes are linked to the water charters. Without the water deeds, the harbor authorities cannot grant berthing rights to our container fleet.""
""Precisely,"" Evelyn said. ""You can kill Marcus right where he kneels. It wouldn't cost me a night's sleep. But if you touch a single hair on my head, the entire port expansion defaults to the federal maritime trust. You lose sixty million in liquidity, your European investors pull their funding, and your syndicate will dismantle your organization piece by piece.""
Mercer stared at her, the mask of polite civility dropping completely, replaced by the dangerous calculation of a predator assessing a lethal adversary.
""You have twenty-four hours to produce the transit ledgers, Mrs. Vance,"" Mercer said quietly. ""If you do, Marcus remains alive to face the public humiliation of his corporate trial. If you fail, I will ensure that both of you disappear into the maritime channels your grandfather worked so hard to build.""
Mercer gestured to his guards. The man holding Marcus released him abruptly, letting Marcus hit the floor face-first before the four operatives turned and walked out the front door.

Marcus scrambled to his feet, wiping blood from his split lip. ""Evelyn... please. You have to save me. We’re married. We took vows.""
Evelyn looked at him, her eyes as cold and empty as a frozen ocean. ""Those vows died the day you forged my name. Pack your clothes, Marcus. We're going to Napa.""
