Chapter 7 - The Road to Oblivion

The black sedan carved through the twisting mountain passes north of San Francisco under a sky heavy with impending rain. Evelyn drove with steady, mechanical control, her hands resting at the ten-and-two position on the leather steering wheel. In the passenger seat, Marcus sat hunched, shivering despite the climate control, his bruised face illuminated by the intermittent flash of oncoming headlights.

""My mother called three times while we were on the bridge,"" Marcus muttered, his voice trembling. ""She said Mercer’s men broke into Davenport’s office. They tore the floorboards out. They didn't find anything, Evelyn. She's hysterical. She says Mercer is going to kill her.""

""Your mother made her choice when she traded your freedom for an airline ticket,"" Evelyn replied without glancing at him. ""Let her run. When the federal marshals serve the subpoenas on Monday, Monaco won't protect her.""

""How can you be so ruthless?"" Marcus snapped, a desperate flicker of his old arrogance flaring up. ""I made mistakes! I was trying to save our position! My father left behind mountains of shadow debt that you knew nothing about! I did what I had to do to protect our name!""

Evelyn pressed down on the accelerator, the sedan surging past a logging truck on a blind curve. ""You protected your ego, Marcus. You took my inheritance to fund private jets, penthouse suites for your mistresses, and offshore bets that failed before the paperwork was dry. You didn't build a name; you inherited a mask and hollowed it out.""

The road narrowed into a cracked asphalt lane winding through towering eucalyptus trees. Rotting wooden fences flanked the overgrown vineyards of the old Vance estate. In the distance, the skeletal silhouette of the abandoned winery rose against the dark ridge, its broken roof beams resembling the ribcage of an ancient beast.

Evelyn pulled the car to a halt before the rusted iron gates. Padlocks hung from chains thick enough to moor a ship, coated in decades of orange rust.

""Get out and cut the chain,"" Evelyn ordered, tossing a heavy pair of bolt cutters from beneath the driver's seat into Marcus’s lap.

Marcus hesitated, staring out into the pitch-black shadows among the decaying vines. ""There are no lights out here. What if Mercer’s people followed us?""

""Mercer is monitoring the Zurich accounts your mother fed him,"" Evelyn said coldly. ""We have four hours before he realizes he’s chasing ghosts. Cut the chain, or walk back to town on foot.""

Marcus stumbled out into the damp air, the bolt cutters trembling in his hands. As Evelyn watched him struggle with the chain, her rearview mirror caught the faint, distant shimmer of high-beam headlights turning onto the private access road behind them.
