Chapter 14 - The Checkmate Protocol

The silence on the line stretched out for five long seconds.
""Explain,"" Mercer said, the warmth vanishing completely from his voice.
""Marcus was an incompetent thief, but he was a compulsive collector,"" Evelyn said, looking out the window as the golden arches of the Golden Gate Bridge appeared on the horizon. ""He recorded every phone call, every meeting, and every transaction he ever had with your intermediaries over the last three years. He thought it was his insurance policy against you.""
""Marcus is a coward,"" Mercer scoffed. ""He wouldn't know how to secure a digital recording if his life depended on it.""
""He didn't secure them,"" Evelyn countered. ""I did. Every time he backed up his phone to the private server in our guest wing, the Davenport Trust firewall mirrored the data. I have nineteen unedited audio files of your operations director detailing the exact routing protocols for laundering cartel money through the harbor expansion project.""
Mercer went completely still. On the other end of the line, the faint drone of the private jet's cabin engine was the only sound.
""Those files were uploaded to a secure legal vault in Frankfurt two hours ago,"" Evelyn continued, her voice razor-sharp. ""If any document bearing Marcus's confession surfaces in a United States court, those audio files will be automatically transmitted to the Department of Justice, the SEC, and the European Maritime Commission simultaneously. Your syndicate won't just lose its licenses, Mercer. You will spend the rest of your life running from interpol.""
""You play a dangerous game, Evelyn,"" Mercer whispered, genuine menace bleeding into his tone.
""I don't play games at all,"" Evelyn said. ""Here is my term: you take your sixty-million-dollar loss. You swallow Marcus's debt as a bad business expense. You pull every operative out of northern California by noon today. And you never speak my name, or my family's name, again.""
""And the Point Arena fiber stations?""
""They remain under the sovereign control of the Davenport Trust,"" Evelyn stated firmly. ""Where they belong.""
There was a long pause, followed by the quiet click of a lighter on the other end of the line.

""Your grandfather would be proud, Mrs. Vance,"" Mercer said softly. ""The debt is settled.""
The line went dead.
