Chapter 12 - Ash and Sovereignty

The morning air on the upper ridge was crisp and clean, carrying the sharp scent of pine needles and damp earth. Evelyn emerged from the hidden stone bulkhead among the wild vines, drawing a deep, cleansing breath into her lungs.

Waiting on the private access road fifty yards away sat a fleet of silver sedans, flanked by men in crisp dark suits bearing the gold insignia of the Davenport Legal Trust. At the center of the convoy stood an elderly man with silver hair and an impeccable trench coat, holding a leather briefcase.

""Good morning, Evelyn,"" said Raymond Cross, her father's oldest surviving legal partner. ""We received your signal forty minutes ago. The state marshals have already sealed the Vance corporate headquarters in San Francisco.""

""And Martha?"" Evelyn asked, handing the three heavy maritime ledgers to the armed courier beside Raymond.

""Arrested at the private jet terminal in Oakland twenty minutes ago,"" Raymond replied with a slight, vindictive smile. ""She had three million in unauthorized company bonds and a forged Canadian passport in her carry-on luggage. The district attorney has already filed thirteen counts of grand larceny, securities fraud, and conspiracy to commit corporate extortion.""

Evelyn walked slowly toward the lead vehicle, looking down at the valley below. From the high ridge, she could see the abandoned winery surrounded by flashing red and blue lights as state police cruisers and federal vehicles converged on the property.

""What about Marcus?"" Raymond asked gently, opening the car door for her.

""Marcus met his investors,"" Evelyn said coldly, sliding onto the leather seat. ""Whatever is left of his accounts will be processed through the federal bankruptcy courts. Ensure that the Davenport Trust files the primary creditor claims. I want every asset, every vehicle, and every piece of jewelry his family bought in the last twenty years auctioned to pay back the pension funds he raided.""

""Consider it done,"" Raymond said, shutting the door.

As the silver convoy pulled away from the ridge, heading south toward the city skyline, Evelyn looked down at her lap. Her phone buzzed with an incoming call from a restricted international number.

She slid the green icon to answer.

""You handled that with remarkable elegance, Mrs. Vance,"" Julian Mercer’s voice purred through the speaker.
