Chapter 15 - The New Horizon

The grand boardroom of the Davenport Maritime Trust sat on the fifty-second floor of the downtown high-rise, looking out over the sparkling expanse of San Francisco Bay. The morning fog had completely burned away, leaving a brilliant canopy of blue sky above the deep-water channels.

Evelyn stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a porcelain cup of black coffee. She wore a tailored charcoal wool suit, her hair styled in a sharp, immaculate bob, her posture radiating absolute command.

Raymond Cross stepped into the room, placing a thick leather-bound folder on the mahogany conference table.

""It's finished,"" Raymond reported. ""The bankruptcy judge signed the final liquidation order thirty minutes ago. Vance Logistics has been dissolved. All physical assets, deep-water berths, and transit charters have been absorbed into the Davenport Trust at zero tax liability.""

""And the family?"" Evelyn asked without turning around.

""Martha Vance accepted a plea deal: eight years in federal corrections for wire fraud and money laundering,"" Raymond said. ""Marcus... Marcus was denied bail this morning. His public defender says he’s completely uncommunicative. He sits in his holding cell staring at the floor.""

Evelyn took a slow sip of her coffee. The weight that had rested on her shoulders for six long years—the constant humiliation, the whispered insults, the exhausting performance of playing the compliant, ignorant wife—had vanished completely. She felt lighter, sharper, and utterly untouchable.

""What are your orders regarding the Point Arena landing stations?"" Raymond inquired, opening his fountain pen. ""The international tech consortiums are already submitting bids for commercial access.""

""Reject all private bids,"" Evelyn said, turning from the window to face the long table. ""We are restructuring the charters as a sovereign trust. No single corporation or private syndicate will ever hold the keys to this infrastructure again. We control the water, we control the land, and we control the data.""

""Understood, Ms. Davenport,"" Raymond said, nodding with deep respect. He paused, noticing a faint flicker of concern in her eyes. ""Is there something else?""

Evelyn walked over to the table and picked up an unmarked, sealed envelope that had been delivered to her private desk that morning. The return address was blank, but the paper was made of heavy, cream-colored linen stamped with an embossed wax seal bearing an unfamiliar crest—a coiled serpent wrapped around an anchor.

She slid her finger beneath the wax, pulling out a single sheet of parchment.
