Chapter 11 - The Reckoning Below

The steel plate in the ceiling gave way with a deafening screech of tearing metal. The sound of heavy boots landing on the concrete walkway echoed down the narrow conduit.
""Evelyn, we have to run!"" Marcus yelled, his rage instantly evaporating into pure terror. ""There has to be another way out! You designed this place!""
""There is another exit,"" Evelyn said, stepping toward the back wall of the archival chamber where an emergency escape hatch led up into the forested ridge. ""It opens into the upper vineyard, three hundred yards from where my private security team is waiting.""
""Thank God!"" Marcus pushed past her, reaching for the latch on the emergency exit door. ""Let's go, open it! Hurry!""
Evelyn did not move to touch the latch. She simply watched him, her eyes unreadable in the soft fluorescent light. ""I said there was an exit, Marcus. I didn't say it was for you.""
Marcus froze, his hand trembling on the cold handle. ""What are you talking about? You can't leave me down here with them! They'll tear me apart!""
""Those men are your creditors,"" Evelyn said evenly. ""They came for the money you stole from their pension funds. You made the promises. You signed the promissory notes. It's time you paid your debts.""
""Evelyn! I'm your husband!"" Marcus screamed, lunging toward her, his fingers clawing for her jacket.
Evelyn moved with swift, calculated precision. She stepped to the side, driving her heel hard into the side of Marcus’s knee. The joint buckled with a sickening pop, sending Marcus crashing to the floor with an agonizing wail. Before he could recover, she scooped up the three golden ledgers, slipped through the narrow emergency door, and pulled the reinforced steel gate shut between them.
The heavy magnetic lock engaged with a deafening chime.
""Evelyn! Open the door!"" Marcus pounded on the reinforced viewing glass with both fists, tears mixing with the grime on his bruised face. ""Please! Don't do this!""
Through the viewing window, Evelyn watched as three armed men in black tactical gear entered the vault behind Marcus. At the head of the group stood Julian Mercer, holding a silenced pistol at his side, looking around the bunker with calm, predatory appreciation.
Mercer didn't look at Marcus, who was sobbing on the floor. Mercer looked straight through the reinforced glass at Evelyn, raising two fingers to his temple in a mock salute.

Evelyn pressed the emergency ventilation seal button on her side of the door. The thick blast shield slid down over the glass, cutting off the sights and sounds of the vault forever.
She turned and climbed the narrow concrete steps toward the surface, leaving the Vance family behind in the dark.
