Chapter 8 - The Subterranean Vault

The iron gate snapped open with a dull, metallic crack. Marcus scrambled back into the car, his breathing ragged and frantic.

""Someone turned off the main road!"" Marcus shouted, pointing back down the tree-lined driveway. ""Two cars! They didn't have their running lights on!""

""I saw them,"" Evelyn said, easing the sedan into gear and rolling silently through the gates without turning on her own headlights. She guided the car along the overgrown dirt road, using only the ambient moonlight filtering through the storm clouds.

They stopped behind the crumbling stone facade of the original fermentation barn. Decades of neglect had allowed wild ivy to swallow the walls, hiding the heavy oak doors that led into the hillside cellars. Evelyn grabbed a heavy industrial flashlight and the silver key, stepping out into the cold, crisp air.

""Where is the pump house?"" Marcus asked, staying close to her heels, his eyes darting frantically toward the dark vineyard rows.

""Beneath the primary aging room,"" Evelyn answered, leading him through a collapsed doorway into the cavernous interior of the stone barn. The air smelled of damp earth, old oak barrels, and ancient mineral dust.

She walked past the shattered remnants of giant wooden vats to the far corner of the subterranean room, where a massive cast-iron intake pipe emerged from the bedrock. At the base of the pipe, half-buried under gravel and old river stones, lay a steel pressure plate with a brass keyhole hidden beneath a hinged flap.

Evelyn knelt down, clearing the debris with her bare hands. She inserted the silver key and turned it hard to the right. A deep, mechanical groan resonated through the stone floor as counterweights shifted behind the rock wall.

A narrow vertical hatch slid back, revealing a rusted iron ladder descending into absolute blackness.

""Go down,"" Evelyn said, stepping aside and shining the beam down the shaft.

Marcus looked at the dark opening, horror twisting his features. ""Down there? Evelyn, it looks like a sewer!""

May you like

""It's the intake tunnel for the northern aquifer,"" Evelyn said flatly. ""The ledgers are inside the waterproof bulkhead at thirty feet. Go down, Marcus, or explain to the men coming up the driveway why you’re standing in the dark.""

Before Marcus could protest, the sound of car tires crushing gravel echoed from outside the barn. Car doors slammed shut in rapid succession.
