Chapter 5 - Ghosts of Vance Logistics

The mention of Marcus’s late father, Arthur Vance, sent a violent tremor through Marcus, who was still pinned against the cold marble floor.
""My father died of a stroke,"" Marcus choked out, straining against the guard’s grip. ""He had nothing to do with Davenport! Leave his name out of this!""
""Be silent,"" Evelyn commanded, her voice cutting through the room with such cold authority that even Mercer raised an appreciative eyebrow. She turned to Mercer. ""Arthur Vance drowned in a private lake three days before an SEC investigation was scheduled to unseal his offshore accounts. The world thought he died a disgraced, bankrupt executive.""
""And the world was half right,"" Mercer agreed, pacing slowly toward the center table where Evelyn’s emerald folder lay untouched. ""Arthur didn't drown by accident, Mrs. Vance. He chose the water because he realized his business partners were not financiers. They were scavengers. He hid the master keys to the international transit routes with your family’s attorney to keep them out of my predecessors' hands.""
Mercer reached out and tapped the emerald folder. ""Your mother-in-law, Martha, knows this. Why do you think she insisted Marcus marry you? It was never about status. It was an extraction campaign. The Vance family has been bleeding your family's estate dry for seven years, searching for those transit credentials.""
Evelyn felt a chilling clarity wash over her. Every interaction with Martha—the cruel reminders of her duties, the pressure to sign joint account authorizations, the casual snooping through her late father's study—it wasn't the bitter insecurity of an overbearing mother. It was espionage.
""You're lying,"" Marcus whined, looking up with wild, desperate eyes. ""My mother loved Evelyn! She wanted us to build a legacy!""
""Your mother sold you out thirty minutes ago, Marcus,"" Mercer said with dry amusement. ""When she left this house, she didn't call you. She called my operations desk in Geneva. She offered to hand over the coordinates to Davenport’s private safety deposit vault in Zurich in exchange for a one-way ticket to Monaco and full immunity from prosecution.""
Evelyn’s phone chimed once more.
She looked down at the screen. The private tracking software she had secretly placed on Martha’s luxury sedan showed the vehicle had not headed toward the highway out of town. The blinking red dot was parked directly outside the ancestral estate of the Davenport family in the historic district.

""She doesn't have the key,"" Evelyn said calmly, meeting Mercer's cold stare. ""She thinks the documents are in Zurich. But Davenport never trusted foreign banks.""
Mercer’s eyes narrowed, his demeanor sharpening instantly into lethal focus. ""Where are they, Evelyn?""
