Chapter 9 - The Ambush at the Barn

Heavy footsteps echoed across the cracked concrete floor of the upper barn. Flashlight beams cut through the gloom, sweeping over the rotted wine vats and broken barrel staves.

""Marcus Vance!"" a harsh, raspy voice shouted. It wasn't Mercer. It was a rougher, street-level accent—the sound of collection muscle from the city’s private loan shark syndicates. ""We know the car is here! Julian Mercer doesn't own your debt exclusively, you little rat! You borrowed five million from the dock unions using forged bills of lading!""

Marcus threw himself down the hatch, scrambling down the iron rungs in sheer, unadulterated panic. Evelyn followed immediately, pulling the heavy steel plate back into place above her head. The lock clicked shut with a muffled metallic snap, severing the moonlight and plunging them into the damp, echoing subterranean tunnel.

High above, heavy fists pounded against the iron plate, accompanied by muffled curses and the sound of pry bars scraping against stone.

""They're going to break through!"" Marcus gasped, clinging to the ladder rungs as water dripped down his neck. ""Who were they? How many people did you borrow from?""

""Me?"" Evelyn retorted, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper as she climbed down past him to the stone ledge below. ""Those are your personal lenders, Marcus. The men you used to pay off the gambling debts your mother hid from the family board. You didn't just ruin Vance Logistics; you mortgaged your own soul to every shark in northern California.""

She reached the bottom platform. The sound of rushing subterranean water hummed through the thick basalt walls. The beam of her flashlight revealed a narrow walkway running alongside a rushing concrete canal—the primary water conduit linking the Napa watershed to the coastal reservoirs.

At the end of the walkway stood a reinforced vault door, painted dull industrial green, embossed with the seal of the maritime transport commission from 1964.

""Open it,"" Marcus pleaded, dropping from the ladder and splashing through the shallow runoff covering the floor. ""Open it and give me the papers! If I give the dock bosses their cut, they'll protect us from Mercer!""

Evelyn approached the vault, but instead of using a key, she rested her hand on the cold surface of a manual wheel lock.

""You still don't understand, Marcus,"" she murmured, turning the heavy iron wheel three rotations clockwise. ""These archives don't contain money. They contain the true ownership deeds of Vance Logistics. My father never leased this land to your family. He foreclosed on it forty years ago.""

The heavy vault door swung open with a pneumatic hiss, revealing an illuminated interior that shocked Marcus into absolute silence.
