Chapter 1 - The Broken Vow

The silence in the master bedroom was heavy, suffused with the sharp sting of cold air and terror. Julian Morelli did not blink. His hand, heavy and clad in tailored Italian wool, rested against the trembling crown of his daughter’s head. Clara was curled on the satin sheets, her knuckles whitening as she clutched the fabric of his lapel. Every breath she drew rattled with pain. Across her exposed arms and along the curve of her swollen belly, deep plum bruises bloomed against pale skin.
In the doorway stood Tyler Hayes, his hands raised in a futile plea. His dark curls were mussed, chest heaving beneath his gray henley shirt. Behind him, his mother Victoria stood paralyzed, her manicured fingers pressed against her lips, pearls catching the dim chandelier light.
"Mr. Morelli, please... it’s not what it looks like," Tyler stammered, his voice fracturing. "Clara fell. She had an accident on the stairs. I was just trying to help her—"
"Quiet," Julian said.
The single syllable dropped like lead. It was not shouted; Julian never raised his voice when he was about to end a life. He turned his gaze slowly from his daughter to the young man. The bodyguards standing flank at the door, two monolithic men in black tailored suits and dark sunglasses, took half a step inward. The click of the door latch engaging behind them sounded like a gunshot.
Clara whimpered, pressing her face deeper into Julian’s shoulder. "Dad... the baby... please, make it stop hurting..."
Julian leaned down, his salt-and-pepper beard brushing her forehead. "You are safe now, my sweet girl. Nobody will ever touch you again." He kissed her hair, then looked up, his dark eyes void of warmth. "Marco. Call Dr. Vane. Have the private ambulance brought to the rear gates. Move her with absolute care."
"Understood, boss," the guard on the left muttered, stepping forward with a sterile wool blanket.
Julian gently eased Clara into Marco’s arms. As she was lifted, her burgundy nightgown shifted, revealing a fresh cut along her collarbone that had seeped blood onto the collar. Julian’s jaw locked. He stood to his full height, adjusting the cuffs of his pinstripe suit.
Tyler stepped backward, colliding with his mother. "Julian, we are family now!" Victoria cried out, finding her voice in desperation. "You gave Clara to Tyler! You agreed to the union between the Morelli and Hayes estates! You cannot disrupt our house like this!"
Julian took three slow, deliberate strides toward Tyler. The young man shrank, his knees trembling.
"I gave you my blood," Julian murmured, his voice a low, lethal vibration. "I gave you the brightest light in my life, thinking you were a man worthy of building an empire beside me. Instead, I find a hyena gnawing at what he could never earn."
"It was an argument, that's all!" Tyler screamed, his composure unraveling. "She doesn't listen! She thinks she runs this house because of your name!"
Julian’s hand moved faster than sight. His fingers clamped around Tyler’s throat, driving the younger man backward until Tyler’s spine slammed violently into the doorframe. Victoria shrieked, falling to her knees.
Tyler choked, clawing at Julian’s iron grip. Julian’s face remained an inch away, completely still, eyes burning with arctic fury.
"You took a belt to my pregnant daughter," Julian whispered into Tyler's ear. "Did you think I would not see the marks? Did you think your father's political friends could protect you from me?"
Julian did not wait for an answer. He tightened his grip until Tyler’s eyes rolled back, then released him, letting the boy crumple into a heap on the hardwood floor.
"Pack nothing," Julian said, looking down at Victoria. "The Hayes family has twenty-four hours to liquidate every asset tied to Morelli shipping. Tomorrow morning, your debt will be called in full."
"You'll ruin us!" Victoria wept. "My husband—"
"Your husband is already dead to this city," Julian cut in, turning his back on them. "And your son has just signed his own execution."

Julian walked out into the corridor toward the elevator where Clara was being wheeled on a stretcher. As the doors began to close, Marco’s radio crackled.
“Boss, we’ve got a problem at the private clinic. There’s a lockdown. A rival crew just blocked the perimeter road.”
