Chapter 5 - The Price of Treason

The dawn was gray and unforgiving. Julian stood on the observation balcony of his private warehouse overlooking the North Port docks. Below him, the industrial harbor was choked with shipping containers painted in faded blues and rust reds. A light mist rolled off the harbor, carrying the stench of saltwater, diesel fuel, and dead fish.

Arthur Hayes was tied to a wooden chair ten feet behind Julian. The older man’s face was bruised, his expensive tailored shirt torn at the collar. Blood trickled from his split lip, but his eyes were wide with defiant panic.

"You can't fight them, Julian!" Arthur wheezed, straining against the coarse ropes. "Dante Castiglione has two hundred soldiers across the tri-state area. He’s been waiting for an excuse to push you out of the maritime corridor for five years! My debt was just his opening!"

Julian took a sip of black espresso from a porcelain cup, never turning around. "You sold out your own granddaughter, Arthur. You sold Clara’s future for three million dollars in bad roulette bets."

"I had no choice! They were going to butcher Tyler!" Arthur sobbed.

Julian finally turned, his cold gray eyes locking onto the broken patriarch. "Tyler is currently chained to a concrete pillar forty feet beneath my mansion. His life is measured by the steady beeping of a heart monitor in an intensive care unit. And you... you have the audacity to speak of choices."

Marco entered the catwalk, carrying a tablet. He handed it to Julian.

On the screen was a live feed of Pier 14. Dante Castiglione’s enforcers had fortified the loading bay. Cranes were already being moved to hoist three critical cargo containers—containers that held the private bearer paper and physical gold bullion that guaranteed the Morelli family’s liquidity. Without them, Julian’s banks would freeze his accounts within forty-eight hours.

"Dante just sent a runner," Marco reported. "He wants an exchange at noon. The cargo for your complete withdrawal from the eastern seaboard and Tyler's release."

Julian handed the tablet back. "Dante mistakes my restraint for weakness. He thinks because my daughter is in a hospital bed, I am paralyzed."

"What do we do, Boss?" Marco asked. "We don't have enough men in position to assault Pier 14 without an all-out street war. The feds will intervene."

Julian walked over to Arthur Hayes. He reached into his coat, pulled out a gold pen, and placed it in Arthur’s lap.

"Arthur," Julian said softly. "You are going to call Dante. You will tell him that the transfer was approved, and that you are personally accompanying the transport trucks to authorize the customs release."

Arthur shook his head furiously. "He’ll know! Dante isn't stupid! He knows you have me!"

"He knows you are a coward who values his own skin above everything else," Julian corrected, his tone chillingly matter-of-fact. "That is precisely why he will believe you. You will tell him you stole the master override codes from my desk while I was at the hospital."

"And what happens to me when he finds out it's an ambush?" Arthur gasped.

Julian patted Arthur's shoulder, an icy gesture that sent shivers down the man’s spine. "You get to pray that my men shoot straight."

Julian turned back to Marco. "Assemble the strike team. No silencers today. I want the entire eastern district to hear what happens when someone raises a hand against my family."

Before Marco could reply, Julian's private phone rang again. It was the hospital's direct emergency line.

Julian answered with a steady voice, but his knuckles tightened around the phone. "Dr. Vane?"

"Julian, Clara is awake," Vane said, his voice laced with urgent dread. "She’s hysterical. She's pulled out her IV lines. She wants to see her husband, Julian... she doesn't know what happened after she blacked out. She thinks he saved her."
