Chapter 8 - The Monster in the Mirror

The basement of the Morelli mansion was an underground fortress of cold stone and reinforced concrete. Water pooled across the floor, hissing where it struck the overheated pipes of the central boiler system.

Julian descended the stone steps, his heavy leather boots splashing through the shallow runoff. His coat was off, his shirtsleeves rolled to his forearms, revealing faded tattoos from his youth—symbols of an older, bloodier era he had fought thirty years to leave behind.

Marco stood outside the heavy iron door of the furnace room, a submachine gun slung across his back, nursing a bleeding gash on his temple.

"He managed to unbolt an iron flange from the plumbing," Marco said, his voice laced with shame. "He caught Ricky off guard when we brought him water. He’s armed with an iron bar."

Julian raised a hand. "Wait outside."

"Boss, he’s cornered. A trapped animal will do anything."

"I am not an animal, Marco," Julian said coldly. "I am the trap."

Julian pushed open the heavy iron door.

The heat inside the furnace room was suffocating. Steam hissed from a cracked steam valve, obscuring the far corner where Tyler crouched. The young man looked unrecognizable: his face smeared with soot and blood, his dark eyes wide with manic hysteria, his knuckles white around a three-foot length of jagged iron pipe.

"Stay back!" Tyler shrieked, swinging the pipe through the steam. "Stay the hell away from me, Julian! I’ll bash your skull in! I swear to God I will!"

Julian closed the iron door behind him and slid the heavy deadbolt into place. The metallic thud resonated like the closing of a tomb.

"You have made a great deal of noise for a man who could only strike a defenseless girl," Julian said, his voice calm, measuring the distance between them.

"She ruined everything!" Tyler screamed, his chest heaving, spittle flying from his lips. "She acted like she was better than me! Every time I spoke, she looked at me like I was dirt! She said Leo would never have the Hayes name! She said he would be a Morelli! I was his father! I had rights!"

"You had privileges," Julian corrected, taking a slow step forward. "Privileges granted by my grace. And you squandered them because your pride was as fragile as glass."

"I’ll kill you!" Tyler charged, raising the iron pipe high, swinging with all the desperate strength of a condemned man.

Julian did not flinch. He slipped inside the arc of the swing with fluid, practiced precision. His left forearm deflected Tyler’s wrist, while his right palm struck Tyler squarely in the center of his chest.

The impact sounded like a sledgehammer hitting wet timber. Tyler’s breath exploded from his lungs, his body propelled backward until his spine slammed into the brick furnace wall. The iron pipe clattered uselessly onto the wet concrete.

Before Tyler could slide down, Julian’s left hand caught him by the throat, pinning him to the scorching bricks.

Tyler choked, kicking his legs, his hands tearing frantically at Julian’s iron fingers. "P-please..."

Julian looked into Tyler’s bulging eyes. For the first time, a flicker of raw, unadulterated hatred broke through Julian’s composed facade.

"Clara woke up an hour ago," Julian said, his voice dropping to a venomous whisper. "Do you know what she told me? She thinks masked men broke into the house. She thinks you fought to protect her. Her mind is so shattered by what you did that she turned you into a hero to survive the memory."

Tyler ceased his struggling, his eyes widening in pathetic realization. "She... she loves me..."

Julian tightened his grip, the veins in his forearm bulging. Tyler’s face turned deep purple.

"She loved an illusion," Julian whispered. "An illusion I am going to let her keep, so her heart does not break while she raises my grandson. But you... you will not get the luxury of being remembered as anything other than dust."

Julian released him. Tyler collapsed onto the concrete, coughing violently, gasping for air, clutching his crushed throat.

"I won't give you a quick death in this cellar, Tyler," Julian said, wiping his hands on a clean handkerchief. "That would be mercy."

Tyler looked up through tears of agony. "What... what are you going to do?"

Julian turned his back, heading toward the iron door.

"You are going to sign the complete legal waiver transferring every asset, every name, and every parental right to Clara. And then, Tyler, you are going to disappear into a federal penitentiary under a name that isn't yours, for crimes you didn't commit, where men much stronger than you will remind you of what you did every single day."

Julian unlocked the door, stepping out into the cool hallway. He looked at Marco.

"Call the District Attorney. Tell him the Morelli family has delivered the suspect responsible for the interstate narcotics ring. Make sure the identity papers match Tyler Hayes."

Marco smiled grimly. "Consider it done, Boss."

As Julian walked up the stairs, his phone rang again. It was Dr. Vane.

"Julian! Come to the NICU immediately. Leo’s vitals... they’re crashing. We’re losing him."
