Chapter 2 - Ambush in the Rain

Rain pelted the reinforced glass of the Mercedes Maybach as the convoy tore through the rain-drenched streets of North Ridge. Inside, Clara lay semi-conscious, an oxygen mask over her mouth, hooked to monitors that beeped in frantic syncopation with her fetal heartbeat. Julian held her limp, cold hand between both of his, refusing to let go.

"Keep the rhythm steady," Dr. Vane urged from the opposite seat, pressing a portable ultrasound probe to Clara’s abdomen. His brow was furrowed with dread. "Internal bleeding is mild, but the placental wall shows stress. If her blood pressure spikes any further, we risk losing the child before we reach the surgical suite."

Julian’s thumb traced Clara’s bruised wrist. "She stays alive. The child stays alive. Do whatever is necessary."

"The North Gate clinic is compromised, Mr. Morelli," the driver said, glancing at the rearview mirror. "Three black SUVs without plates are shadowing our rear bumper. They took out our tail car two blocks back."

Julian didn't flinch. "Who is behind the wheel?"

"Not the Hayes family," Marco answered from the passenger seat, racking the slide of an automatic pistol. "They don't have the muscle. It looks like the Castiglione syndicate. Tyler’s father must have sold his debt to them weeks ago."

A sudden violent impact jarred the heavy vehicle. Clara groaned in pain, her eyelids fluttering open. "Dad...?"

"Close your eyes, Clara," Julian ordered softly. "Breathe."

Another crash hammered the rear quarter panel. The Maybach swerved across the wet asphalt, tires screaming before the traction control caught hold. Through the tinted rear window, Julian could see the glaring LED light bars of an armored truck attempting to pit-maneuver them toward the concrete river embankments.

"Marco," Julian said calmly. "Clear the road."

"With pleasure, sir." Marco lowered his window an inch, leaned into the blast of rain, and squeezed off four controlled rounds. The front tire of the pursuing truck shredded with a loud pop, sending the vehicle spinning out of control into a row of parked sedans, exploding in a spray of shattered glass and sparks.

Yet, as they cleared the intersection, two more vehicles appeared ahead, parked diagonally across the bridge entrance, blocking their only route to the hospital.

The driver slammed on the brakes, the car skidding to a halt thirty yards from the barricade. Men in tactical gear stepped out into the rain, raising automatic rifles.

"They're not trying to negotiate," Marco said, his voice tense. "They want the girl dead to break your lineage."

Julian released Clara’s hand and adjusted his tie. He opened the concealed compartment under the seat and withdrew a sleek, nickel-plated revolver.

"Stay with her, Doctor," Julian commanded. He looked down at Clara, whose tear-streaked eyes were wide with fear. "Three minutes, Clara. Count to one hundred and eighty."

Julian opened the door and stepped out into the pouring rain. The water instantly soaked through his bespoke wool coat, but he did not quicken his pace. Behind him, three more Morelli security vehicles arrived, tires screeching, disgorging eight heavily armed men into the deluge.

The lead gunman at the bridge raised his rifle. "Morelli! Step down and hand over the car!"

Julian kept walking forward, his revolver resting against his thigh. "You stand on my road. You draw breath in my city. And you threaten my blood."

Before the man could pull the trigger, Julian fired twice. The lead gunman collapsed instantly. Gunfire erupted into the night, muzzle flashes illuminating the bridge in strobes of orange and white. Julian moved forward with terrifying precision, firing with cold calculation, never flinching as bullets chipped the asphalt around his feet.

Within two minutes, the bridge was silent once more, save for the patter of heavy rain on metal. The opposing gunmen were neutralised or fleeing into the shadows.

Julian walked back to the Maybach, wiping a fleck of rainwater from his cheek. He opened the door and climbed inside.

"Drive," he commanded.

Dr. Vane looked up from the monitors, his face ghostly pale. "Mr. Morelli... the monitor. The baby's heart rate just plummeted to zero."
