Chapter 6 - The Veil of Lies

The hospital room was cloaked in semi-darkness, the only illumination coming from the soft glow of vital monitors. Clara sat upright against the raised bed, her skin pasty, her auburn hair tangled around her trembling shoulders. Fresh bandages covered her forearms, masking the deepest lacerations.

When the heavy wooden door opened, Julian stepped in alone. His expression softened instantly, the ruthless mob boss melting away into an agonizingly gentle father.

"Clara," he whispered, crossing the room to sit beside her on the mattress.

Clara lunged forward, throwing her frail arms around his neck. She broke into ragged sobs, her body trembling with phantom terror. "Dad... Dad, where is he? Where is Tyler? What did they do to us?"

Julian held her tightly, stroking the back of her head just as he had done when she was a little girl frightened by thunder. "Hush, little bird. You are safe. You are in Saint Jude's."

"Tyler was trying to protect me," Clara cried, her voice muffled against his lapel. Her mind was fractured by trauma and heavy sedation. "Men came into the bedroom... men with masks... Tyler tried to fight them off... they hit me... they pushed me into the nightstand..."

Julian’s heart twisted with profound grief. The psychological shock had rewritten her memory, creating a protective illusion to shield her from the brutal truth: that the man she had loved and married had been the monster who battered her.

Julian pulled back slightly, looking into her tearful hazel eyes. "Is that what you remember, Clara?"

"Yes!" she insisted, clutching his hands frantically. "Tyler was screaming my name. He told me to hide under the bed! Dad, did they kill him? Is he dead? Where is my baby? Where is Leo?!"

"Leo is alive," Julian said firmly, the truth anchoring her spiraling panic. "He is in the neonatal unit. He is fighting, Clara. The doctors are taking care of him every second."

Clara exhaled a ragged breath, tears spilling down her cheeks. "I want to see him. Take me to him."

"Soon. You need to rest, or the surgery will open."

"And Tyler?" she pleaded, her eyes searching Julian's stone-cold face. "Where is my husband, Dad? Please tell me you didn't hurt him. I know how you are... I know you think he’s weak..."

Julian swallowed the venom rising in his throat. He could crush her illusion right now—tell her that Tyler had struck her repeatedly, that Tyler had traded her life away, that Tyler was shivering in a damp basement cell awaiting death. But one look at the fragile monitors displaying her fluctuating heart rate told him that the truth would kill her before the trauma healed.

"Tyler is... handling family business," Julian lied smoothly, his voice a masterclass in deception. "He had to speak with his father about the security breach. I told him to stay away until I secured the hospital perimeter."

Clara leaned back against the pillows, closing her eyes in relief. "Thank God... thank God he’s okay."

Julian stood up, adjusting the blanket over her legs. Every fiber of his being burned with self-loathing for the lie, but his resolve hardened into diamond. He would let her believe the fairy tale for as long as it took to heal her body. But Tyler Hayes would pay for every bruise twice over.

As Julian reached the door, Clara called out faintly. "Dad?"

"Yes, my darling?"

"Don't let them hurt Tyler. He’s the father of your grandson."

Julian paused, his hand on the brass handle. His eyes turned black with suppressed rage.

"Nobody will ever hurt Tyler again, Clara," Julian replied quietly. "I promise you."

He walked out into the corridor, shutting the door behind him. Marco was waiting, his phone in hand.

"Boss," Marco said, his voice flat. "Dante Castiglione just broadcasted an ultimatum on our encrypted channel. He says if you don't show up at Pier 14 alone within thirty minutes, he’s going to execute the ten dockworkers on our payroll and sink the cargo ship."

Julian looked at his watch. "Prepare the convoy. It's time to teach Dante why my father named me after an emperor."
