Chapter 14 - Shadows in the Sun

Six months had passed. Summer had arrived in the northern woods of Maine, turning the rocky coast into an emerald paradise. The Morelli estate was quiet, the sound of gulls and breaking surf replacing the roar of sirens and gunfire that had defined Julian’s life for four decades.

On the manicured lawn overlooking the cliffs, Clara was laughing, kneeling beside a white picnic blanket where seven-month-old Leo was enthusiastically attempting to crawl toward a wooden toy boat. Clara’s skin was glowing with health, her hair shining in the midday sun. The past had become a distant bad dream, neatly filed away behind the protective walls her father had constructed.

Julian stood on the stone terrace above, leaning against the balustrade, holding a glass of iced tea. Beside him, Marco stood dressed in a quiet civilian polo, scanning the perimeter monitors on an encrypted smartphone.

"The transfer of the southern shipping corridors is finalized, Boss," Marco reported quietly. "The Commission has accepted your retirement. Your nephew Anthony has taken over the day-to-day operations in the city. The Morelli name is completely detached from the street syndicates."

"Good," Julian said without looking away from his grandson. "Let Anthony have the headaches. My work in that world is finished."

"And the boy?" Marco asked, lowering his voice to a bare whisper. "Tyler?"

Julian took a sip of his tea. "Where is he?"

"High-security medical penitentiary in Marion, Illinois," Marco replied. "Under federal alias. His appeals were denied last week. He will serve thirty-five years without parole. He hasn't spoken a single word since his conviction. The guards say he sits in the corner of his cell, staring at his hands."

Julian nodded slowly. "Ensure the warden receives his quarterly stipend. Tyler Hayes stays inside those walls until his hair is as white as mine."

"Understood, Boss." Marco turned to leave, but hesitated at the terrace doors. "Boss... there’s one more thing."

Julian turned his head slightly. "Speak."

"Victoria Hayes died in federal detention yesterday. Sudden coronary arrest. The news hasn't hit the papers yet, but Arthur Hayes has formally requested a release of her remains."

Julian looked back toward the lawn, where Clara had picked up Leo, spinning him around in the air until the baby erupted into breathless, joyful giggles. The Hayes family was now completely eradicated—erased from society, from power, and from history.

"Pay for the burial," Julian instructed coldly. "An unmarked plot in the county cemetery. No memorial. No family gathering."

"Yes, sir." Marco stepped inside the house, leaving Julian alone in the warm sea breeze.

Julian descended the stone steps to the lawn. As he approached, Leo caught sight of him, squealing with delight and extending his chubby arms.

"Grandpa!" Clara mimicked the baby's voice, smiling up at Julian. "Look who finally decided to join the party!"

Julian knelt on the grass, taking the boy into his arms. Leo immediately grabbed Julian’s gray beard with both hands, tugging with surprising strength. Julian laughed—a deep, genuine laugh that seemed to shake off decades of cold dust from his soul.

"He has your grip, Dad," Clara said, leaning back on her elbows. "He never lets go of what he wants."

"A Morelli never surrenders what belongs to him," Julian replied, kissing the baby’s soft forehead.

As the sun began to dip behind the pines, Clara gathered the picnic blanket. "I'm going to take him inside for his bath. Are you coming in?"

"In a few minutes, darling. I want to watch the sunset."

Clara smiled, carrying Leo toward the mansion. "Don't stay out too long. The ocean breeze gets cold."

Julian watched them walk away until the glass French doors closed behind them. He turned back toward the vast Atlantic horizon.

Then, his phone buzzed in his pocket—a phone with an encrypted number that only three people on Earth possessed.

Julian pulled it out. The text message on the screen was from an anonymous server in Geneva:

“A private trust fund was opened in Zurich this morning under the name Leo Hayes. Initial deposit: five million dollars. Sender: Tyler Hayes.”
