Chapter 9 - The Fragile Thread

The harsh fluorescence of the neonatal intensive care unit was blinding after the darkness of the estate cellar. Julian strode through the double doors, discarding his bloody coat at the sanitation station. He didn't care that his dress shirt was crumpled or that soot stained his cuffs.
Around incubator seven, four doctors and three nurses were clustered in a frantic dance of emergency resuscitation. The high-pitched, continuous alarm of the heart monitor sliced through the hum of machinery like a razor blade.
"Epinephrine, zero point zero one milligrams, IV push!" Dr. Vane commanded, his voice strained. A nurse plunged a syringe into the miniature line running into the infant's umbilical catheter.
Julian stood at the edge of the glass partition, his hands clenched into rigid fists at his sides. For all his millions, all his soldiers, all his absolute power over the city’s underground veins, he was utterly powerless against the fragile mechanics of an eight-hundred-gram infant’s chest.
"Fight, Leo," Julian whispered, the words tearing from his throat. "Fight for your mother."
Dr. Vane used two fingers to perform chest compressions, his movements impossibly gentle, pressing rhythmically against the baby's tiny ribcage. "Come on, little man. Breathe. Come back to us."
Seconds stretched into agonizing eternities. The monitor continued its flat, droning tone. Forty seconds. Fifty seconds. A minute.
Julian felt a cold hollow open in the pit of his stomach. If this child died, Clara’s sanity would disintegrate. The violence he had unleashed, the kingdom he had built—all of it would turn to ash. He bowed his head, his lips moving in silent, desperate prayer—the first prayer Julian Morelli had uttered in thirty-five years.
Take me, he bargained into the silence of his soul. Take my empire. Take my breath. Leave the boy.
A sharp, erratic chirp broke the drone.
Dr. Vane froze his hands.
The monitor beeped once. Then twice. A weak, stuttering rhythm appeared on the green phosphor screen.
Beep... beep... beep...
"Sinus rhythm restored," a nurse gasped, tears welling in her eyes. "Heart rate seventy... eighty-five... climbing to one hundred and ten. Oxygen saturation stabilizing at ninety-two."
Dr. Vane closed his eyes, his entire body shuddering with relief. He stepped back from the incubator, stripping off his surgical gloves with shaking fingers. He turned to Julian, nodding slowly through the glass.
"He held on, Julian. He's back."
Julian exhaled a breath he felt he had been holding for twenty-four hours. He pressed his forehead against the cool glass, his eyes burning with unshed tears. The boy was alive. The lineage held.
Ten minutes later, Dr. Vane stepped out into the hallway, holding a clipboard. "He survived the crisis, but his lungs are severely underdeveloped due to the trauma. We need a specialized pediatric ventilator that isn't available in this hospital. The only unit in the state is at the University Medical Center across the bay."
Julian straightened up, his protective instinct instantly flaring back into sharp, tactical focus. "Arrange the transport."
"It's risky," Vane warned. "Moving him across the bay requires a specialized mobile ICU. And the storm winds are picking up again. If the vehicle is delayed or compromised, he won't survive the transit."
"He will not be compromised," Julian declared coldly. "I will escort him personally."
Just then, Marco approached from the elevator, his phone pressed to his ear. He hung up, his face grim as granite.
"Boss, we have an issue with the Hayes family estate. Victoria Hayes just held a live press conference on the courthouse steps. She's accusing you of kidnapping Tyler and holding Clara hostage. The state police have issued a search warrant for this facility."
Julian’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. "Victoria chooses to play with politics when her family is on the brink of extinction. She thinks public spotlight will shield her from the shadows."
"The tactical units are en route to the hospital right now," Marco warned. "They’ll be here in twenty minutes to execute the warrant. If they seize Clara, she’ll be placed in protective custody under state control."

Julian looked back through the window at his sleeping grandson.
"They won't touch her," Julian said, his voice deadly quiet. "Prepare the helicopter on the south roof. We are moving Clara and Leo together. And tell our contacts at the Attorney General's office to release the dossier on Victoria Hayes’s offshore foundations. Let us see how long her press conference lasts when the federal fraud indictment drops."
