Chapter 10 - Wings in the Tempest

The rain slashed horizontally across the rooftop helipad of Saint Jude’s Hospital, illuminated by the flashing strobe lights of the twin-engine Sikorsky S-76. The rotor blades whipped the wet night air into a deafening roar, blowing mist across the staging crew.
A specialized neonatal transport pod was wheeled out onto the tarmac by Dr. Vane and two specialized flight paramedics. Behind them, Clara was wheeled on a gurney, wrapped in blankets, an oxygen mask over her face. She was awake, her hazel eyes wide with disorientation and fear as the wind tore at her hair.
"Dad!" she screamed over the thunder of the engines, reaching out blindly. "Where are we going?! What's happening?!"
Julian stepped to the side of the gurney, his firm grip locking onto her cold hand. He leaned down, his face inches from hers so she could hear his voice over the storm.
"We are transferring Leo to a facility with better equipment, Clara! He is going to get the best care in the country. You are flying with him!"
"Where is Tyler?!" she cried out, panic rising in her chest as she looked around the dark rooftop, seeing only Julian’s armed security team forming a defensive ring. "He should be here! Why isn't he here?!"
Julian swallowed the bitter poison of the lie, his face remaining an impenetrable mask of paternal reassurance. "He had to surrender his passport to clear the investigation, Clara! He is meeting us at the private estate in Maine once the transport is complete! Focus on your son! Focus on Leo!"
The mention of her child broke through her panic. She turned her tearful gaze to the incubator pod being loaded into the helicopter’s cabin. "Leo... my baby..."
"Clear the pad!" Marco shouted from the rooftop access doors, his rifle raised.
Down in the streets surrounding the hospital, sirens wailed in a rising chorus of blue and red lights. Three state police cruisers and two black unmarked SUVs had breached the lower gates, their spotlights sweeping the facade of the medical center.
"The warrant team is inside the elevator shafts!" Marco shouted over the radio headset. "They’re two floors down!"
Julian helped the paramedics slide Clara’s stretcher into the helicopter, securing the harnesses with practiced efficiency. He turned to Dr. Vane. "Keep them stable. If anything happens to either of them, there is no corner of the earth where you can hide from me."
"I know, Julian," Vane shouted back, checking the IV pumps. "I will protect them with my life."
Julian stepped back, preparing to close the cabin door.
Clara reached out, catching the sleeve of his wet suit. Her knuckles were bruised, her eyes pleading. "Dad... you’re coming with us, right? You have to come!"
Julian looked at his daughter, his heart aching with an intensity that almost broke his ribs. He gently unclasped her fingers, pressing a kiss to her palm.
"I have to settle the debts left behind, Clara," Julian whispered, though the roar of the blades drowned out his words. "A king does not flee his city while the wolves are still at the gate."
He slammed the helicopter door shut and slapped the hull twice.
The Sikorsky lifted off slowly, pitching into the gale-force winds before banking hard toward the north, disappearing into the dark, rain-swept clouds.
Julian turned around, standing alone on the wet tarmac as the roof access doors were violently kicked open.
Six state troopers in tactical body armor stepped out into the rain, rifles raised, accompanied by Victoria Hayes and two high-priced defense attorneys.
"Julian Morelli!" the lead officer shouted through a megaphone. "Step away from the ledge and keep your hands visible! You are under arrest for obstruction of justice and unlawful confinement!"
Victoria pushed past the troopers, her expensive raincoat billowing in the wind, her face twisted with vindictive triumph. "Where is my son, Julian?! Where is Tyler?! What have you done to him?!"

Julian stood tall, slowly buttoning his suit jacket. He did not raise his hands. He simply looked at Victoria with a cold, mocking smile that made the blood run cold in her veins.
"Tyler is currently paying the interest on your family's debts, Victoria," Julian said, his voice carrying effortlessly through the wind. "And the principal is due right now."
