Chapter 11 - The Fall of the House of Hayes

The interrogation room at the State Police Headquarters smelled of stale coffee, damp linoleum, and cheap floor wax. Julian sat in the center of the room at a scarred metal table, his hands resting flat on the surface, entirely unperturbed by the two armed guards standing behind his chair.
Across the table sat Special Agent Miller of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, flanked by the State Prosecutor, a sharp-featured woman named Evelyn Vance.
"You're in deep water, Morelli," Vance said, slapping a thick manila folder onto the table. "We have witnesses placing your vehicles at Pier 14 during an armed confrontation with the Castiglione syndicate. We have a missing person report for Tyler Hayes. And we have an emergency custody petition filed by his mother."
Julian didn't look at the folder. He raised his eyes, fixing Vance with an icy, patronizing stare.
"You have rumors, Counselor," Julian replied smoothly. "Pier 14 is a commercial port managed by a third-party logistics firm. My vehicles were there to inspect delayed shipments of medical supplies. If Dante Castiglione chose to engage in criminal activities nearby, that is a matter for the police, not my legal team."
"And Tyler Hayes?" Agent Miller leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. "His vehicle was found abandoned two blocks from your estate. His mother swears you abducted him at gunpoint."
Julian chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. "Victoria Hayes is a hysterical woman whose family is facing total bankruptcy. Have you checked the financial wire services this morning, Agent Miller?"
Vance’s phone buzzed on the table. She frowned, picking it up. As she read the notification, the color slowly drained from her face.
"What is it?" Miller asked, irritated.
"The Department of Justice just unsealed an eleven-count indictment against Hayes Maritime and Arthur Hayes," Vance whispered, her voice faltering. "Wire fraud, offshore money laundering, and treasonous technology transfer to foreign shell corporations. The entire Hayes family asset registry has been frozen by federal order."
Julian tilted his head slightly. "Arthur was a careless man. He thought he could borrow thirty million dollars from European cartels and bury the paper trail in state infrastructure bonds. My accountants discovered the discrepancy yesterday afternoon and forwarded the evidence to the Attorney General's office."
Miller stared at Julian in stunned disbelief. "You dropped a dime on your own daughter's in-laws?"
"I have no tolerance for thieves, Agent," Julian said coolly. "Especially thieves who steal from the city’s tax base. As for Tyler... the boy is an adult. If he ran away from his family's disgrace, that is his prerogative. Perhaps you should check the international flight registries for Caracas or Panama."
Vance swallowed hard, closing her manila folder. The entire legal foundation of Victoria Hayes’s petition had just dissolved into thin air. A family indicted for multi-million-dollar federal fraud could not claim emergency custody of a Morelli heir.
"Mr. Morelli," Vance said, her professional tone barely masking her defeat. "You are free to go. But do not leave the state."
Julian stood up, smoothing the wrinkles from his pinstripe trousers. "I have no intention of leaving, Counselor. I have an estate to manage."
Julian walked out through the precinct lobby. As he exited the glass doors, the media circus erupted into flashing cameras and shouted questions. At the edge of the crowd, Victoria Hayes stood surrounded by federal marshals who were already clicking handcuffs around her manicured wrists.
She locked eyes with Julian, her face contorted in raw, helpless fury. "You destroyed us! You orchestrated this whole thing!"
Julian stopped on the granite steps, looking down at her with absolute indifference.
"I didn't destroy your house, Victoria," Julian said softly as the cameras flashed. "Your son took a hammer to the foundation. I merely let the roof fall in."
He descended the steps and entered the waiting Maybach where Marco held the door.

"Where to, Boss?" Marco asked, pulling the heavy door shut. "The airstrip?"
"To the docks first," Julian said, his eyes darkening. "Dante Castiglione survived the morning. I don't intend to let him survive the night."
