Chapter 12 - A Debt Paid in Salt

The Castiglione safehouse was hidden within a dilapidated marine supply depot at the edge of the industrial marshes. The surrounding marshland was cloaked in thick, sulfurous fog, masking the approach of Julian's black SUVs.
Inside the warehouse, Dante Castiglione paced like a caged tiger, his right arm bound in a heavy white cast and sling. Four of his remaining lieutenants sat around a card table, their faces pale, watching the perimeter monitors.
"We have to move," Dante barked, kicking a metal barrel. "Get the boat ready. If we can reach international waters, the New Jersey crews will take us in."
"Dante, the harbor patrol has locked down the bay," one of his men said timidly. "They’re checking every hull. We won't make it two miles."
"Then we shoot our way through!" Dante shouted. "I'm not sitting here waiting for that old devil to—"
The heavy metal warehouse doors were blown off their hinges with a thunderous blast of thermite and high explosives.
The shockwave knocked Dante and his men to the floor, concrete dust and smoke filling the interior. Before the smoke could clear, Julian's assault team moved in with ruthless efficiency. Three shots rang out—controlled, silenced double-taps. Dante’s three lieutenants collapsed beside the card table, dead before their bodies hit the floor.
Dante scrambled backward through the dust, coughing, his good hand clawing at his holster.
A heavy leather boot stepped firmly onto his wrist, pinning his hand to the floor.
Dante looked up through the stinging haze. Julian Morelli stood over him, holding a nickel-plated revolver at his side, looking as immaculate as if he had just stepped out of a private club.
"Julian... wait..." Dante wheezed, terror finally shattering his bluster. "We can make a deal. I have offshore accounts... thirty million in Cayman banks... I'll give you the routing codes! I'll leave the country! You'll never hear my name again!"
Julian knelt beside the broken syndicate boss, his face inches away. "You allied yourself with Tyler Hayes. You helped him hide what he was doing to my daughter. And you tried to assassinate my family on a public bridge."
"It was business! Just business!" Dante sobbed, tears cutting clean tracks through the soot on his cheeks. "Arthur promised me the port! I didn't know the girl was that badly hurt!"
"Her name is Clara," Julian whispered, his voice dangerously soft. "And the child you almost killed is named Leo."
Julian reached into his pocket and produced a small, laminated photograph. It was an ultrasound printout, showing the faint, curved shape of an unborn child. He laid it gently on Dante’s chest.
"I promised Clara that nobody would ever threaten her family again," Julian said. "I intend to keep my word."
"Please, Morelli... have mercy..."
"Mercy is a luxury for men who honor boundaries, Dante," Julian said, rising to his full height. "You crossed mine."
Julian turned and walked toward the ruined entrance of the warehouse. He didn't look back as Marco stepped forward, raising his weapon.
A single muffled shot echoed through the foggy marshland, swallowed instantly by the vast silence of the harbor.
Julian stepped out into the cold night air. He took a deep, clean breath of the sea wind, feeling the ancient weight of thirty years of street warfare finally settling into stillness. The city was quiet. The rivals were broken. The threats to his bloodline were eliminated.
Marco caught up to him, tucking his weapon away. "It's done, Boss. The Castiglione network has completely collapsed. The remaining crews are surrendering their territories to our captains."

Julian checked his watch. It was two o'clock in the morning.
"Fuel the jet, Marco," Julian commanded, climbing into the vehicle. "It is time to go home to my daughter."
