Chapter 1 - The Cold Boundary

The antiseptic tang of the surgical delivery suite did little to dull the sharper sting of betrayal hanging in the room. Clara lay on the raised gurney, her breath hitching against the sharp, rhythmic pangs rippling across her abdomen. Sweat clung to her hairline, matting dark strands against porcelain skin. Her knuckles were white, gripping the rough linen sheet as though it were the only tether keeping her anchored to the earth.
Across the stainless-steel divide stood Julian. His black bespoke suit was immaculate, the silver tie clip gleaming under the overhead surgical lamps, yet his eyes darted with an erratic, hollow desperation. For seven months he had been a ghost, a signed non-disclosure agreement, and a string of unanswered calls. Now, flanked by fluorescent tubes and the hum of cardiac monitors, he claimed fatherhood like an overdue debt.
"You don't take another step," Gabriel repeated.

Broad-shouldered, clad in an unbuttoned cream jacket that revealed the edge of an ink-black cross tattooed against his collarbone, he formed an impenetrable wall. His presence was not born of violence, but of an absolute, immovable fidelity. He was the man who had answered the door when Clara collapsed in the winter rain; he was the brother Julian had spent a lifetime trying to outshine.
"This is my child, Gabriel," Julian said, his voice straining against the quiet professionalism of the two uniformed officers at the door. "You cannot lock me out of my own bloodline. The Sterling estate requires an heir."
"An heir," Gabriel murmured, the word tasting like ash. "You speak of a human soul as an asset ledger."

On the bed, Clara let out a ragged sob, turning her face toward Gabriel. "Gabriel... please. Make him stop."
Gabriel turned instantly, his posture softening. He leaned down, placing a warm, steady palm over her trembling fingers. "Breathe, Clara. Look at me. Only me. You are safe now."
