Chapter 12 - Winter's Respite

Winter arrived early in the valley, blanketing the orchard in a thick layer of pristine white snow. The apple branches became arches of frost, and smoke drifted lazily from the stone chimney of the valley house.

Life settled into a peaceful, domestic rhythm. Gabriel’s harbor clinic had found a steady rhythm with a newly appointed director, allowing him to work remotely on community housing initiatives from his study. Clara had begun teaching violin to three neighborhood children from the local town, the sound of scales and simple minuets filling the afternoons.

One evening, while Leo slept soundly in his crib, Clara joined Gabriel by the fire. He was sketching blueprints for a children’s playground to be built at the community center.

"You never talk about your mother, Gabriel," Clara said gently, placing a cup of hot cider beside his papers.

Gabriel paused his pencil. He reached up, his fingers lightly brushing the dark tattoo on his throat—a stylized feather intertwined with ivy. "She died when I was twelve. She was an artist. My father spent his life trying to turn her into a trophy. When she became ill, he hired the finest doctors, but he never sat by her bed. He treated her illness like a personal inconvenience."

He looked up at Clara, his eyes dark and vulnerable. "When I saw you on that operating table, looking at Julian... I saw my mother looking at my father. I swore to myself that as long as I had breath in my body, history wouldn't repeat itself."

Clara reached out, her fingers closing over his. "You broke the cycle, Gabriel. You saved more than just Leo."
