Chapter 10 - The Turning Tide

Julian’s face turned from pale to an ugly, mottled crimson. "That was a private business conversation taken out of context!"
"Context?" Judge Vance interrupted, her spectacles resting low on her nose, her gaze icy. "In what context, Mr. Sterling, is referring to an unborn child with a cardiac condition as an 'invalid asset' acceptable in this court?"
Julian gripped the edge of the witness stand. For the first time, his polished corporate mask cracked, revealing the hollow, frightened vanity beneath. He looked out into the gallery, catching Gabriel's eye. He expected triumph on Gabriel's face; instead, he saw only profound sadness.
Clara took the stand next. She didn't recount her grievances with anger. "Julian can give him a kingdom," Clara concluded, her voice steady and clear. "But he cannot give him a father. You cannot outsource love."
When Gabriel took the stand as a character witness, Harrington tried to corner him on his financial entanglement with Clara.

"You've housed her, fed her, paid for her legal representation," Harrington challenged. "What is your motive, Mr. Sterling? What do you expect in return?"
Gabriel looked directly at the judge. "Nothing. In my family, everything came with a price tag. I am simply proving to this mother and this boy that some debts are paid in advance, freely, because doing the right thing is the only legacy that survives the grave."
