Chapter 7 - The Depositions

The custody hearing was preceded by grueling depositions in a sterile conference room high above the city center. Julian sat flanked by three litigators, exuding corporate power. Across from him sat Clara, supported by an elderly, sharp-witted family law attorney named Marcus, whom Gabriel had known for decades.
Harrington went on the offensive immediately, questioning Clara's employment history, her medical leaves, and her reliance on Gabriel’s charity.
"Isn't it true, Ms. Evans, that you are entirely dependent on Gabriel Sterling’s personal wealth?" Harrington asked, tapping a pen against the glass table. "What happens if his charity runs out? What stability can you offer this child?"
Clara felt the room shrinking. Her throat tightened. She glanced at Julian, who smiled thinly—a calculating, triumphant smirk.
Clara closed her eyes for a brief moment. She remembered the warmth of the sun on the valley porch, the sound of Gabriel's wood plane, and the steady beat of Leo's tiny heart against her chest. When she opened her eyes, the fear was gone.
"Gabriel did not offer me charity," Clara said, her voice clear, resonating through the microphone. "He offered me dignity. Your client offered me an abortion when the scans showed complications, and an NDA when I refused. Stability isn't a bank balance, Mr. Harrington. Stability is someone who does not run away when life becomes inconvenient."

Julian’s face tightened. Harrington glanced down at his notes, visibly thrown by the direct mention of the non-disclosure agreements.
Across the room, Gabriel sat in the gallery, his face solemn, but his eyes gleaming with quiet pride.
