Chapter 8 - A Melody Rediscovered

That night, back in the valley, the house was silent except for the crackle of the hearth. Clara put Leo down in the newly finished oak crib. The wood was silky smooth, polished with natural beeswax.

She walked into the living room, where her old, worn violin case sat on the sideboard. She unlatched the brass fittings. The velvet inside was faded, but the instrument remained intact. With trembling fingers, she tuned the strings, lifted the bow, and drew the first note.

It was shaky at first, weeping into the empty room. But as muscle memory returned, the music swelled—rich, melancholic, and deeply beautiful. It was an elegy for the pain she had endured and an anthem for the life she was rebuilding.

Gabriel sat on the wide stone hearth, holding a cup of tea, listening without interrupting. The firelight cast dancing shadows across his tattooed neck and the lines of his face.

When she finished, letting the final harmonic ring out into the stillness, Clara had tears in her eyes. "I thought I lost it," she whispered.

"You didn't lose it," Gabriel said gently. "You just had to live through the silence to find the right song."

Clara lowered the violin, looking at him across the warm room. For the first time, she saw Gabriel not just as her protector or Julian’s brother, but as a man who carried his own deep, unspoken wounds.

"Who protected you, Gabriel?" she asked softly. "When you were growing up in that house?"

Gabriel looked into the embers of the fire. "Nobody. That’s how I know what it costs to be left alone."
