Chapter 6 - An Unwelcome Visit

The sanctuary did not remain undiscovered for long. On a crisp Tuesday afternoon, the sound of gravel crunching under heavy tires signaled the arrival of a sleek black town car.

Julian stepped out, accompanied by his primary corporate attorney, an austere man named Harrington. Julian adjusted his cuffs, surveying the weathered barn and apple trees with visible disdain.

Clara, holding Leo securely against her chest inside the screened porch, felt her pulse spike. But before she could panic, Gabriel stepped out onto the porch steps, blocking the pathway to the front door.

"You're trespassing, Julian," Gabriel said evenly.

"This is ridiculous, Gabriel," Julian sneered, taking off his sunglasses. "You’ve turned my child into a farmhand’s dependent. I came to make an offer. Five million dollars into a trust for Clara, full medical coverage, provided she surrenders custody and relocates out of state. Harrington has the documents."

Harrington produced a leather folio, but Gabriel didn't even look at it.

"Did you ask about his heart?" Gabriel asked.

Julian frowned. "What?"

"Did you ask if his murmur has cleared? Did you ask how much formula he takes, or if he sleeps through the night?" Gabriel took one step down the wooden stairs, his gaze boring into his brother. "You don't care about him, Julian. You care about losing to me. You care about the board members whispering that Julian Sterling was rejected by his own son."

"He is my son!" Julian snapped, his composure slipping. "By blood! By law!"

"Blood is a biological accident," Gabriel replied softly. "Fatherhood is a daily choice. Leave before I have the sheriff remove you."
