Chapter 14 - The Final Reckoning

Before they could step fully into their future, the past demanded one final, quiet closing.

Julian called. Not through an attorney, but directly to Gabriel’s private line. His voice was hollow, stripped of its corporate bravado. The Sterling board, weary of the public fallout and Julian’s erratic behavior, had forced him to step down as CEO. He was leaving for an indefinite stay in Singapore.

Gabriel met Julian at a diner on the highway boundary between the valley and the city. It was a neutral, unglamorous place, smelling of burnt coffee and griddled onions.

Julian looked worn, gray threading through his temples. He pushed a certified cashier’s check across the booth table. It was a substantial sum, made out to Leo Evans.

"I don't want his forgiveness," Julian said, looking out the rain-streaked window. "I don't even know if I’m capable of being a father, Gabriel. But I don't want him to grow up thinking I left him with nothing."

Gabriel looked at the check, then pushed it back across the table.

"Keep it, Julian," Gabriel said gently.

Julian frowned, stung. "You're refusing his inheritance?"

"He has an inheritance," Gabriel replied. "He has a home where he is cherished. He has a mother whose love isn't conditional on stock performance. And he has my name, if he ever chooses to take it. If you want to do something for your son, Julian, heal yourself. Stop running. Come back when you understand that fatherhood is not an endowment—it’s an altar."

Julian stared at his brother. Slowly, his hands began to tremble. For the first time in his life, Julian did not argue. He bowed his head, tears finally slipping past his guard, and nodded.
