Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Litigation

Two weeks later, the sanctuary of the recovery ward was breached by a courier carrying a thick manila envelope. Julian had filed for emergency sole custody, citing Clara’s lack of independent income and his own immense financial capacity to provide state-of-the-art medical care.

Clara sat on the edge of the hospital bed, the legal documents trembling in her hands. The text was brutal, reducing her devotion to "emotional instability" and highlighting her career as a freelance musician as "financial negligence."

"He wants to take him away from me before he even knows my voice," Clara whispered, the paper crinkling under her grip. "He has the best lawyers in the city. I have nothing."

Gabriel took the papers from her hands, set them on the bedside table without reading them, and knelt before her. "You have Leo. And you have me."

"Gabriel, this will drag you into the mud. Julian will use your past—the protests, the fallout with your father, the harbor clinic—he’ll twist everything."

"Let him try," Gabriel replied, his voice level, rooted in a quiet confidence that seemed impossible to shake. "A court evaluates resources, but a family court ultimately evaluates fitness. Julian thinks fatherhood is bought at auction. We are going to remind him that a father is someone who stays when the lights go out."

Gabriel pulled a set of keys from his pocket and laid them in her open palm. "My home in the valley is ready. It has space, clean air, and a nursery that looks out over the orchard. You and Leo are coming home with me today."
