Chapter 15 - The Orchard in Full Bloom

A year after the cold, sterile afternoon in the surgical suite, the orchard was heavy with ripening fruit.
A small gathering of friends from the harbor clinic and the valley community had assembled under the canopy of the oldest apple tree. Strings of warm fairy lights hung from the branches, swaying gently in the late afternoon breeze.
Clara stood in a simple linen dress, her violin resting on a chair nearby. In her arms, Leo clutched a wooden toy bear Gabriel had carved for him, his round cheeks flush with laughter.
Gabriel stood beside them, dressed not in the stark suits of the Sterling empire, but in a tailored dark vest and rolled-up white sleeves, his face relaxed, glowing with a serene, unshakeable joy.
Pastor Thomas closed his Bible with a smile. "By the power vested in love, mutual respect, and unyielding grace, I pronounce you partners for life."
The small crowd cheered. Gabriel turned to Clara. He took her hands, his thumb tracing the soft skin of her wrist.
"I promised you in that room that you were safe," Gabriel whispered, loud enough only for her. "I renew that promise today, tomorrow, and every day until the end."

Clara smiled through happy tears, leaning up to kiss him. "You didn't just keep us safe, Gabriel. You taught us how to live."
As the sun dipped below the valley crest, painting the sky in shades of amber and violet, music rose from the orchard. Leo clapped his hands to the rhythm of his mother's violin, his clear laughter ringing out into the twilight—the sound of a life fiercely protected, unconditionally loved, and completely free.
