Chapter 2 - Echoes of an Old Fire

The delivery room fell into a tense cadence as the obstetrics team entered, their movements brisk and practiced. Julian was escorted to the corridor, his parting look filled with bitter promises of legal war. Yet inside the room, the battle was intimate and fragile.
Years before the Sterling empire split at the seams, Gabriel and Julian had stood on opposite ends of their father’s legacy. Julian chased boardrooms and social standing, viewing human relationships as leverage. Gabriel, scarred by their father’s ruthless ambition, had walked away to build community clinics and shelters in the harbor district, wearing his convictions on his skin.
When Clara entered Julian’s life, she had been an idealistic violinist, vibrant and naive. Gabriel had watched from a distance, admiring her warmth while privately dreading the cold machinery of his brother’s ambition. When Clara discovered she was carrying a child with a rare congenital heart risk, Julian’s public relations team deemed it an inconvenient narrative. Julian vanished to Europe on an extended corporate acquisition, leaving behind a severance package labeled as prenatal care.
It was Gabriel who found her in an unheated brownstone apartment, surrounded by medical bills and eviction notices. He hadn't asked questions; he had simply picked up the pieces.
"Push, Clara, steady now," Dr. Vance instructed softly.
Clara’s nails dug into Gabriel’s palm. She didn't look at the monitors or the doctors; her gaze locked onto Gabriel’s dark, unwavering eyes. "I’m scared," she whispered, tears slipping past her temples.

"You don't carry this alone anymore," Gabriel whispered back. "I made a promise. Every storm ends, Clara. Push through it."
With a final, agonizing effort that seemed to strip away the remnants of her past life, a thin, sharp cry cut through the hum of the machinery.
