Chapter 10 - Bloodline and Balance

Sterling lowered his hands very slowly, his chest heaving under his tailored coat. The cool, arrogant mastermind had vanished, replaced by an aging operator who recognized an apex predator when she stood before him.

""What do you want, Elena?"" Sterling asked, his voice hoarse. ""You want the syndicate? Take it. Victor built the engine, but you always knew how to steer it. The board won't challenge you.""

""The board won't have the opportunity,"" Elena replied. She gestured toward the four surviving mercenaries. ""Tell your men to drop their kit and clear out. If I see their faces within fifty miles of this property, Vance will skin them.""

Sterling didn't hesitate. He gave a curt, jerky nod to his men. ""Leave the weapons. Walk out the main gate. Now.""

The mercenaries didn't need to be told twice. They unclipped their tactical vests, dropped their assault rifles with heavy metallic clatters onto the marble floor, and retreated rapidly out through the shattered entrance into the dark mist.

Julian remained on the floor, curled against the sideboard, weeping silently in terror.

Elena walked over to the desk near the parlor doors, picking up a satellite phone and tossing it onto the floor in front of Sterling. ""Call your extraction team. Tell them the operation was compromised by hostile third-party actors. You will report to the board that Victor’s files were destroyed in an accidental fire.""

Sterling looked down at the phone, then back up at Elena. ""They’ll know it’s a lie. The forensic teams will find the hard drives.""

""There won't be any hard drives,"" Elena said calmly. ""Because in fifteen minutes, this estate will be reduced to a crater. Every server, every backup drive, and every piece of paper in this valley will be burned.""

Sterling frowned, genuine confusion breaking through his fear. ""You're burning the ledger? You’re destroying thirty billion dollars in shadow assets?""

""I don't need the money, Sterling,"" Elena replied, her dark eyes reflecting the flickering fire in the doorway. ""I need my children to grow up without a bounty on their heads. Money can be rebuilt. Dead children cannot.""

Julian suddenly looked up, his voice trembling with manic desperation. ""You can't burn it! My entire fortune is tied to those shell accounts! If you delete the keys, I have nothing!""

Elena looked down at the pathetic old man who had tried to ransom her son. ""You already have nothing, Julian. You just haven't realized it yet.""
