Chapter 13 - The Voice from the Void

The interior of the vehicle fell utterly still. Even Vance’s knuckles whitened against the leather of the steering wheel. Leo sat up straight, his breath catching in his throat as the familiar cadence of his father’s voice registered in his mind.

Elena did not gasp. Her heart rate remained steady, but her eyes narrowed into two slivers of black obsidian. She didn't immediately answer; she let five full seconds of digital silence hum over the encrypted channel.

""You're dead, Victor,"" Elena said, her voice dropping into a register that was colder than winter ice. ""I identified the body in Frankfurt. I buried the ashes myself.""

A low, familiar chuckle came through the audio feed, followed by the faint rustle of paper and the distinct background ambient hum of an aircraft cabin.

""You identified a body that matched my dental records and DNA profile, Elena,"" the voice replied smoothly. ""A body provided by the same intelligence specialists you trained in Berlin. You knew the protocols. When the board decided to liquidate the executive branch, one of us had to die to let the other disappear.""

""You left our children on that lawn,"" Elena said, her words coming out like razor wire drawn tight across skin. ""You let Nolan bring mercenaries to the front gate.""

""I knew Nolan was compromised six months ago,"" Victor answered without a trace of remorse. ""And I knew that if I stepped in, the consortium would deploy their secondary networks. But you... you were retired. Unregistered. They thought you were a decorative asset, Elena. They walked right into your operational envelope.""

""You used us as bait,"" Leo whispered from the back seat, his voice shaking with sudden, burning fury.

The line went silent for a beat. When Victor spoke again, the paternal warmth was gone, replaced by the calculating intellect of the master strategist. ""Leo. Good. You're awake. Listen to me carefully. What your mother did tonight was the first phase. But Sterling wasn't working for the consortium.""

Elena gripped the receiver tightly. ""Sterling confirmed the board authorized the strike.""

""Sterling lied to keep his family alive,"" Victor said grimly. ""The board was assassinated forty-eight hours ago in Vienna. The people hunting us now aren't corporate suits, Elena. They are the Directorate.""

Elena felt the first genuine chill of fear crawl down the back of her neck.
