Chapter 9 - The Anatomy of a Strike

""Drop it, you bitch!"" Nolan screamed, his eyes bloodshot and completely wild with hysterical desperation. ""I don't care about the ledger! I don't care about the board! You ruined my life! You took everything from me!""
Time seemed to dilate inside the great hall. Sterling shouted an order to stand down, but his voice was swallowed by the sudden deafening bark of Nolan’s rifle.
Elena didn't hesitate. She didn't dive for cover. Instead, she pivoted sharply on the ball of her left foot, stepping inside the bullet’s trajectory as a 5.56 round tore through the fabric of her shoulder, grazing the flesh beneath. The pain registered only as a sharp burst of heat, instantly suppressed by adrenaline.
In the same continuous motion, Elena reached to her side, unholstering her suppressed pistol and firing twice up toward the gallery. The rounds struck the balustrade directly beneath Nolan’s hands, sending heavy marble fragments blasting into his face. Nolan shrieked, dropping the rifle and tumbling backward over the mahogany railing.
He fell twelve feet, crashing onto the lower landing with a brutal, sickening crunch of broken bone.
Simultaneously, Marcus’s sniper team outside opened fire through the shattered upper clerestory windows. The two mercenaries covering Sterling’s flanks collapsed before their weapons could track toward the stairs, neutralized with terrifying precision.
The remaining four mercenaries froze, caught in a crossfire they couldn't see, their target acquisition completely compromised.
Elena walked calmly toward the fallen Nolan, her pistol leveled at his chest. Nolan was gasping, both legs twisted beneath him, blood pouring from cuts across his face.
""Please..."" Nolan choked out, spitting blood onto the polished stone. ""Please, Elena... we were family. Victor was my cousin...""
""Victor had no family,"" Elena whispered, stopping directly over him. ""He had assets, liabilities, and ghosts. You just became a liability.""
She pulled the trigger without blinking. The suppressed pop was muffled, almost gentle compared to the violence that preceded it. Nolan went completely limp, his eyes staring blankly at the ruined ceiling.

Elena turned back toward Sterling, the smoking barrel dropping back to her side. Sterling stood frozen, his hands raised halfway, his mercenaries refusing to engage under the invisible threat of the sniper sights trained on their temples.
""Your turn, Sterling,"" Elena said, her voice perfectly calm. ""Are we going to negotiate, or do I make the next call to Zurich?""
