Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

""You worked for him for fifteen years, Sterling,"" Elena said, descending the marble steps slowly, unhurried, as if greeting guests at a private gala. ""And yet, you never once asked where his operational intelligence came from.""
The mercenaries raised their rifles, centering their laser sights on Elena’s chest.
""Don't shoot,"" Sterling held up a gloved hand, his voice dropping an octave. ""If she dies without entering the secondary authentication cipher, the ledger locks permanently. Every asset we have freezes across sixteen international jurisdictions.""
""Smart boy,"" Elena noted, reaching the bottom landing and stopping ten feet from the barrels of their guns. ""You always were better at accounting than field tactics.""
Julian scrambled toward Sterling’s feet. ""Kill her! She’s bluffing! Victor’s dead, and she has nowhere to run! We take the kids, we force the passwords out of them!""
Elena’s eyes flicked to Julian, the temperature in the room plummeting instantly. ""You mention my children again, Julian, and I won't let Marcus shoot you. I’ll do it with my bare hands.""
""You don't have the leverage here, Elena,"" Sterling countered, taking half a step forward. ""I have twelve men surrounding this house, six in this room, and heavy transport waiting at the gate. You have a handful of loyalists and two terrified children trapped in a bunker.""
Elena opened the leather folder she was holding. She extracted a single sheet of paper and let it drop to the marble floor between them.
Sterling glanced down. It was a high-resolution satellite photograph of an offshore banking facility in the Cayman Islands, overlaid with real-time biometric tracking data showing his own family entering a residential villa in Zurich.
Sterling’s composure cracked for the first time. His breath hitched. ""Where did you get this?""
""I didn't get it, Sterling,"" Elena replied softly. ""I authorized it. Three hours before Nolan even stepped onto my lawn. Did you really believe Victor built this entire architecture without an automated response protocol?""
A heavy silence descended upon the ruined hall, broken only by the crackle of burning timbers near the entrance.
""Call them off,"" Sterling whispered, his voice trembling slightly.
May you like
""Tell your men to lower their weapons first,"" Elena countered.
Before Sterling could answer, the sharp sound of an assault rifle charging echoed from the second-floor gallery. Nolan had dragged himself up the side stairs, snatching a fallen mercenary’s rifle, his finger twitching wildly against the trigger as he pointed the barrel directly at Elena’s back.
