Chapter 11 - The Ash Protocol

Ten minutes later, the grand estate had been entirely evacuated. Vance’s team had loaded the children into an unmarked, armored Suburban parked inside the underground service tunnel that connected the wine cellar to an abandoned barn half a mile down the valley.

Elena stood in the center of Victor’s private study on the second floor. The room was lined with thousands of leather-bound books, antique globes, and priceless art pieces collected over decades of covert global operations.

Marcus stood by the heavy mahogany desk, holding an industrial incendiary charge wired to four remote detonators.

""Everything is set, Elena,"" Marcus said, looking around the opulent room with a touch of melancholy. ""The vault beneath the cellar has been wiped. Vance transferred the clean offshore trust funds into three private accounts under your maiden name. You have enough capital to buy a small nation.""

""I don't want a nation, Marcus,"" Elena said, running her hand along the edge of Victor’s heavy oak desk. ""I want a quiet house with a garden that doesn't require perimeter sensors.""

""A woman with your skillset never gets a quiet life,"" Marcus warned quietly. ""They will look for you. The syndicate has tentacles in Washington, London, Beijing. Even without the ledger, someone will remember your face.""

""Let them look,"" Elena replied, pulling a heavy silver lighter from her pocket—the matching pair to the one Marcus carried. ""The only people who knew my actual clearance level are dead, dying, or standing in this room.""

She looked at Julian, who was zip-tied to a heavy leather armchair in the corner of the study. His eyes were wide with terror as he watched Marcus prime the thermite charges.

""Elena! Please!"" Julian sobbed, thrashing against the heavy plastic restraints. ""You can't leave me here! This is murder! You're a mother, for God's sake!""

Elena walked over to him, leaning down until her face was inches from his. ""A mother protects her own, Julian. You taught Nolan that family meant leverage. I'm teaching you that family means retribution.""

She turned without another word and walked toward the hidden exit behind the false bookcase.

Marcus clicked his lighter shut, stepped through the passage, and hit the ten-minute timer on the main charges. The heavy iron door clicked shut, sealing Julian inside the vault of his own greed.
