Chapter 12 - Highway Ghosts

The black Suburban moved silently along the winding secondary roads of the valley, its headlights switched off, running entirely on infrared night optics. Behind them, against the dark ridge of the mountain, a brilliant column of orange and white flame suddenly erupted into the midnight sky.

The concussive thump of the thermite explosion shook the vehicle’s chassis even three miles away. The estate—the multi-million-dollar compound, the servers, the art, and the bodies—was vaporized in a sustained four-thousand-degree thermal storm that left no DNA, no hard drives, and no paper trails behind.

Inside the Suburban, Maya slept soundly with her head resting on Leo’s lap. Leo remained awake, staring out the tinted window at the fiery plume rising above the trees.

Elena sat in the front passenger seat, cleaning the grazing wound on her shoulder with antiseptic wipes. She didn't wince as the alcohol bit into the torn skin. She bandaged it with clinical efficiency, pulling a dark woolen sweater over her frame to conceal the dressing.

""Mom?"" Leo’s voice came from the rear seats, quiet and hesitant.

Elena turned her head slightly. ""Yes, Leo?""

""Are we bad people?""

The question hung in the quiet, climate-controlled air of the vehicle. Vance, who was driving, kept his eyes locked on the road, his hands steady on the wheel.

Elena was quiet for a long moment. She didn't offer a platitude. She looked at her son’s reflection in the rearview mirror, seeing the lingering shock mixed with a burgeoning understanding that childhood was permanently behind him.

""Your father and I did terrible things, Leo,"" Elena said honestly. ""We lived in a world where the only choices were to be the butcher or the meat. We chose to be the butchers so that you and Maya would never have to be either.""

""Will we ever go home?"" he asked.

""Home was never that house, Leo,"" Elena replied, reaching back and gently squeezing his hand. ""Home is wherever the three of us are breathing. And from tonight on, we have no past.""

Vance’s radio crackled softly. A encrypted channel beeped twice, signaling an incoming voice transmission from an unlisted frequency.

Elena reached forward and keyed the receiver. ""Speak.""

A voice she hadn't heard in two years echoed through the car’s speakers—deep, calm, and unmistakably familiar.

""You handled the lawn cleanly, my love.""
