Chapter 3 - The Broken Circle

The round had come from a suppressed long-range rifle stationed in the hills overlooking the vineyard. Julian dropped flat, his forehead striking the stone with a dull thud. The old man was bleeding from a superficial cut across his scalp, his dignity entirely dissolved into whimpering survival instinct.

""They're not our men, Nolan!"" Julian wheezed, curling into a fetal ball against the foundation of the house. ""You fool! You told them where the estate was!""

Nolan, still pinned beneath Elena’s boot, froze. His smug arrogance was rapidly deteriorating into genuine dread. ""I... I only contacted the brokers. They promised a clean trade. They said they only wanted the offshore access codes!""

""The brokers don't leave witnesses, Nolan,"" Elena said, releasing her foot from his wrist and stepping back into the shadow of the portico. ""They never have. You invited the wolves to dinner, thinking you were the hunter.""

Three dark figures emerged from the tree line, moving in staggered combat spread across the open lawn. They wore non-descript tactical gear and thermal optics, their weapons raised at low-ready. They weren't street muscle; they were a corporate clean-up squad hired to erase every trace of Victor’s empire.

""Vance, execute contingency Alpha,"" Elena commanded calmly into her earpiece.

Instantly, the high-pressure landscape sprinklers engaged across the wide expanse of turf, hissing violently as mist flooded the air. To a thermal lens, the sudden release of ground-temperature well water created a blooming wall of distortion, instantly blinding the attackers' night-vision systems.

Before the intruders could adjust, Elena stepped around the stone column. She raised her weapon with both arms extended, her stance locked in textbook balance. Three controlled, rhythmically spaced shots hissed from her suppressor.

Fifty yards away, the lead intruder stumbled, collapsing into the wet grass as his momentum failed. The second operator swung his barrel toward the flash, but Elena had already repositioned, slipping behind the perimeter fountain. Another muffled crack, and the second man fell clutching his thigh, rolling behind an ornamental boulder for cover.

The third intruder halted, realizing the terrain had become a slaughterhouse. He raised a hand toward his comms unit to call for reinforcements, but before his fingers touched his ear, a thin red laser dot centered squarely between his shoulder blades from the darkness behind him.
