Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Vault

Beneath the estate’s wine cellar, behind a reinforced steel bulkhead disguised as a row of oak casks, the bunker hummed with the steady drone of independent air scrubbers. Inside, Maya sat on a velvet cot, holding a silver music box that Victor had given her before his disappearance. Leo stood near the armored blast door, his ear pressed against the cold steel, listening to the muffled thuds reverberating through the bedrock.

""Mom’s going to fix it,"" Maya said softly, her small fingers winding the key of the music box. The melody was fragile, out of place among the steel and concrete.

""Mom isn't an accountant,"" Leo replied without turning around. His young voice had lost its childish cadence, hardened by what he had witnessed on the lawn. ""She kicked Julian across the patio like he was made of paper. And those men... they obey her like an army.""

The heavy hydraulic bolts on the door groaned. Leo jumped backward, grabbing a heavy brass fire iron from the corner hearth and raising it with trembling hands.

The door hissed open, venting a puff of pressurized nitrogen. Elena stepped through, her blazer now removed, revealing the dark tactical vest beneath and two fresh magazines strapped across her ribcage. Her cream dress shirt was stained with damp soil, but her expression was perfectly composed.

""Put it down, Leo,"" she said gently, stepping inside and letting the vault door slide shut behind her.

Leo lowered the brass poker, his eyes searching her face. ""Who was Dad really?""

Elena walked to the central table, where a terminal displayed live surveillance feeds of the burning front gates. She placed her sidearm on the desk with a heavy, definitive clatter.

""Your father was the chief architect of an international shadow syndicate,"" Elena said plainly, refusing to insult her son with comforting lies. ""He built the network that world governments used when they needed problems solved without diplomatic paper trails. And my job was to make sure he never betrayed the terms.""

""Did you love him?"" Leo asked, his voice cracking slightly.

May you like

Elena paused, her fingers resting lightly on the cold steel of the desk. ""Victor was my partner. And in our world, loyalty is the only real form of love."" She looked up, her gaze shifting to Maya, then back to the monitor.

On the screen, a convoy of three armored black SUVs smashed straight through the estate’s iron wrought gates, their headlights blazing through the darkness like twin spears of flame.
