Chapter 2 - Blind Iron

The sudden plunge into darkness did not produce chaos; it produced lethal precision. Within a heartbeat, the tactical lights mounted beneath the bodyguards’ sidearms ignited, slicing through the dusk in stark, blinding shafts.

""Perimeter breach, Section Four,"" one of the operatives muttered into his collar, his voice devoid of panic. ""Main power grid terminated from the outside.""

Elena did not flinch. She kept her left hand firmly over Leo’s shoulder, pulling him behind the armored silhouette of the lead operative. Down on the grass, Nolan tried to leverage the confusion, lunging blindly forward to grab Leo’s ankle as a shield. He never made contact. Elena’s boot drove downward with concussive force, pinning Nolan’s wrist against the hard-packed earth. Nolan howled, the sound choked off as the heel dug into the nerve cluster near his joint.

""Move again, and I take the hand,"" Elena said, her voice flat, devoid of anger. She didn't look down at him; her eyes were fixed on the tree line beyond the garden wall.

""Julian!"" Nolan shrieked into the gloom. ""Get the safe house open! Call the reserve team!""

Julian didn't answer. The old man was scrambling on hands and knees across the flagstones, desperately dragging himself toward the heavy mahogany French doors leading inside the villa. He knew what the severed power grid meant. Victor had built this compound with fail-safes designed to lock down instantly if the master key was compromised.

""Commander Vance,"" Elena spoke, addressing the lead bodyguard without breaking her gaze toward the dark woods. ""Clear the patio. Secure the girl.""

A second operative appeared from the shadows near the rose pavilion, carrying Leo’s six-year-old sister, Maya. The girl was silent, wide-eyed, her fingers buried in the fabric of the operative’s vest. She had learned long ago that when mother spoke in that voice, survival meant silence.

""The children go into the vault beneath the wine cellar,"" Elena ordered. ""You take four men and hold the subterranean access. Do not open that vault for anyone except me.""

""Understood, Ma'am,"" Vance replied, signaling two men forward. ""And the trespassers?""

""Let them step onto the lawn,"" Elena replied, reaching beneath the lapel of her tailored cream blazer and producing a sleek, matte-black suppressor. She screwed it onto the threaded barrel of a custom combat pistol with fluid, muscle-memory speed. ""They came for Victor's legacy. It would be rude to make them search for it.""

A sudden high-velocity crack tore through the evening air, shattering the glass doors inches above Julian’s head and sending heavy stone shrapnel spraying into the patio.
