Chapter 14 - The Directorate's Shadow

The Directorate was not a corporation. It was not a criminal syndicate. It was the deep-black multinational committee that oversaw global black-budget intelligence operations—the very entity that had originally trained Elena before she went rogue to build an empire with Victor.
""They found the Zurich accounts,"" Victor continued, his voice tight with urgent tension. ""They know about the children. Elena, you didn't erase the ledger by burning the house. They intercepted the packet the moment you entered your secondary authentication cipher.""
Elena looked down at her hands, realization crashing over her like a tidal wave. When she had overridden the failsafe in the vault to lure Sterling inside, the signal hadn't just rerouted power—it had broadcast a beacon directly to the Directorate's listening posts in Bavaria.
""Where are you, Victor?"" she demanded.
""Thirty thousand feet over the Atlantic,"" he replied. ""My plane touches down at a private airstrip outside Montreal in six hours. If you cross the border at Maine, my extraction team can meet you at the safe zone.""
""No,"" Elena said coldly.
""Elena, listen to reason—""
""You sacrificed our children's safety to run your psychological games, Victor,"" Elena cut him off, her tone leaving no room for debate. ""You don't get to command this unit anymore. You faked your death to save your own skin, and now you want me to bring the ledger directly to your landing strip.""
""If you don't come to Montreal, they will hunt you down within twenty-four hours!"" Victor snapped, losing his composure for the first time. ""They have satellite tracking locked onto your vehicle right now!""
Elena looked at Vance. The driver nodded instantly, understanding the silent command. He cut the steering wheel hard, swerving the heavy SUV off the paved highway and onto a dirt logging trail buried deep beneath the dense canopy of the northern pines.
Elena reached down to the vehicle’s central floorboard, pulling the heavy-duty power-cutoff switch that killed the SUV’s entire electrical system, including the GPS transponders and satellite radio.
Before the connection died, Elena spoke into the mic one last time:
May you like
""Let them hunt, Victor. Because when I find you, I won't need a ledger.""
She slammed the switch down. The screen died. Total darkness swallowed the interior once more.
