Chapter 15 - The Wolf at the Border

The silence of the pine forest was absolute. Outside the stalled Suburban, the cold mountain air smelled of damp earth, pine needles, and distant rain.

Vance stepped out first, his night-vision goggles lowered, rifle raised as he scanned the perimeter. The four remaining loyalists stepped out behind him, forming a tight defensive perimeter around the vehicle with practiced, lethal coordination.

Elena climbed out of the passenger side, pulling her collar up against the biting wind. Maya was awake now, holding Leo’s hand as they stepped down onto the pine needles. Neither child cried. In a few violent hours, they had adapted to the reality of their survival.

""Vance,"" Elena called softly.

""Ma'am.""

""Scuttle the Suburban. Use the magnesium charges. We move on foot across the ridge to the abandoned rail line.""

""Understood,"" Vance said. ""And your husband?""

Elena looked up through the dense branches at the dark sky above, where invisible satellites circled in silent orbits, watching the earth below.

""Victor made his choice two years ago,"" she said, her voice steady, flat, and absolute. ""He thought he could manipulate both sides of the board. He forgot that every game has an endgame.""

She turned to Leo, kneeling before him on the damp forest floor. She took off Victor's antique silver lighter and placed it into her son’s small hand, curling his fingers around the cold metal.

""Keep this,"" she said.

""Why?"" Leo asked, staring down at the lighter. ""You hate him.""

""Because it reminds us of what happens when you believe your own lies,"" Elena said, rising to her feet and chambering a fresh round into her sidearm with a sharp, definitive clack. ""From this moment on, we aren't running from the Directorate. And we aren't running from Victor.""

Leo looked up at her, his hazel eyes wide and sharp in the moonlight. ""Then what are we doing, Mom?""

Elena looked north, toward the ridge where the border lights flickered faintly in the distance.

""We are going to hunt them all down,"" Elena whispered into the night. ""One by one.""

She turned toward the tree line and led her children into the dark, leaving the smoldering ashes of the empire behind them, disappearing like ghosts into the wild frontier."
