Chapter 1 - The Weight of Sunlight

The heavy double glass doors clicked shut behind Nora, cutting off the venomous echoes of the marble foyer. The morning sunlight was blinding, striking the sprawling limestone driveway with an intensity that made her eyes burn. For five years, this estate had been an gilded cage where every compliment had teeth and every glance carried a ledger. She didn't look back at the grand facade of the Sterling manor, nor did she hasten her stride. Julian expected her to sprint away in tears, broken and destitute. Eleanor expected her to beg on her knees for an allowance. Neither understood that the woman walking down the gravel path was no longer the docile bride they had chipped away at for half a decade.

Her beige wool coat swayed against her ankles, the crisp autumn wind biting through the fine weave of her knit dress. Her fingers gripped the taupe leather handbag with deliberate firmness. Inside, nestled beneath the ordinary debris of a woman's daily life, sat a matte-black flash drive and an encrypted audio recorder still humming with the faint pulse of active battery life. Every word Julian had snarled, every spiteful dismissal Eleanor had purred regarding the family accounts—it was all cataloged, timestamped, and preserved.

At the end of the long, curving perimeter wall, a sleek black sedan stood idling by the wrought-iron gate. The driver stepped out, opening the rear door with practiced discretion. As Nora slid into the leather interior, she pulled her phone from her coat pocket. The screen lit up with three missed calls from Julian's personal secretary and a single unread text message from an unsaved number.

She tapped the notification. It read: The offshore ledger from the Cayman holding matches the signatures. But there’s a second clause you didn't find in the safe. Drive straight to the harbor. Nora’s pulse spiked against her ribs. She looked out the tinted window as the estate vanished into the treeline, realizing Julian’s betrayal ran far deeper than an illicit fortune—and her escape had triggered an invisible countdown.
