Chapter 12 - The Grand Jury

Three weeks later, the municipal courthouse in the city center was besieged by media vans and flashing cameras. The fall of the Sterling dynasty had become the financial scandal of the decade. Nora arrived in a simple navy wool suit, refusing the sunglasses and scarves other high-profile witnesses hid behind. She walked past the shouting reporters with Arthur Vance by her side, head held high.
Inside Courtroom 302, Julian Sterling sat at the defense table. Stripped of his tailored suits, dressed in an ill-fitting orange remand jumpsuit, he looked smaller, his posture sunken and defeat etched into the deep lines around his mouth. When Nora entered the gallery, his eyes snapped to hers, a desperate mixture of pleading and resentment burning in his gaze.
She did not return his stare.
Taking the stand, Nora swore the oath with a clear, resonant voice that filled the wood-paneled room. For four hours, she systematically dismantled Julian’s defense, presenting the audio logs, the hidden bank transfers, and the forensic timeline of how her father’s signature had been forged during his final days in hospice care.
When the prosecutor presented the audio recording captured by her handbag on the morning of her eviction, the courtroom fell dead silent. Julian's arrogant voice echoed through the speakers: “Get out of my house! Leave everything my son paid for.” Followed immediately by Nora's calm, prophetic reply: “For court.”
The jury foreperson didn't even look at Julian when the recording ended. The defense attorney slumped back in his chair, quietly whispering to his co-counsel to begin negotiating terms for a fifteen-year plea.

Nora paused, looked down at him for a brief, motionless second, and said: ""You made your choices, Julian. Now pay for them.""
