Chapter 4 - The Unmarked Key

The roar of the outboard motor drowned out the frantic commands echoing from the pier. Nora sat crouched beneath the low fiberglass canopy of the water taxi, clutching her taupe bag in one arm and Arthur's battered briefcase in the other. As the coastline blurred into a streak of industrial gray, she unzipped the inside pouch of her handbag and pulled out her late father’s silver pocket watch. It had been the only sentimental item she insisted on carrying out of the Sterling foyer.

With shaking hands, she pressed the side release. The front lid popped open, revealing the intricate gears. Tucked behind the delicate spring mechanism was not a photograph, but a miniature, flat brass key etched with an eight-digit serial number: 09-14-88-ST.

Her father had placed it there on his deathbed, whispering words she had long dismissed as feverish rambling: When Julian reveals who he truly is, look inside the box he thinks he already owns.

For years, she believed her father was warning her about a bank deposit box. But Arthur’s revelation about the central vault at Sterling Trust changed the context completely. The vault didn't belong to the bank—it belonged to her family long before Eleanor Sterling married into old money and swallowed up the local institutions.

Her phone buzzed. A text message arrived from an unknown sender. It was an image of Arthur being forced into the back of a black SUV outside the pier, accompanied by a single sentence: Return the briefcase to Julian's penthouse by 8:00 PM, or Vance loses his license—and his breath.

Nora stared at the screen, her knuckles white. Julian thought he was dealing with the frightened girl who had cried in the garden when he shattered her mother’s vase. He had forgotten who raised her. She tapped her phone, dialing the one person Julian feared more than any auditor: Elena Sterling, Julian’s estranged, disinherited older sister.
